I liked it a lot too. Didn't know what to expect from the title, but figured it out soon enough.

Argh! I fell into the old two-versions-of-the-same-thing trap and used the wrong version, costing me a bunch of points (the desired version took me several wrong letters to finally get). Despite that, I thought it was a very clever puzzle. Nicely done!

Good set of puzzles.
Wasn't my best performance. They kept me on my toes, but I didn't keep my balance.
No wine ; pretzels and peppermint patties while doing puzzles next time.

Hi everyone,
Sorry it took me so long to thank you for all of your comments -- my refrigerator bit the dust, and I had to buy a new one and arrange for delivery pronto. Now I'm trying to eat up as much as possible that's in the freezer, but I have a small tummy, so it'll be tough. Anyone want to help?

Anyway, thank you all for your kind and generous comments, and I'm glad you enjoyed the puzzle! I knew I was taking a little bit of a risk with it since it was kind of offbeat, but ultimately I decided it was worth it to go ahead.

I'd like to thank my editor Sploofishy, who was very patient and allowed me to change my clues at the last minute. You see, I think I'd made the puzzle too difficult to begin with, and I didn't want to frustrate all of you. It was tough coming up with clues that pointed you in the right direction without giving too much away. I'd also like to thank Sploofishy for encouraging me to go ahead with this puzzle rather than an alternate.

As others have said, I have a new respect for all the editors who create WPs on a regular basis. I do hope we have the opportunity to create more WPs in the future, as I have lots more fiendish ideas up my sleeve.

Thanks again!
-- Geri

Hey Geri, off-topic, but you really ought to update your profile. I see you've done well in some more Word Matches since you wrote it.

Thank you for the enlightenment....

Just curious-- did anyone besides me lose points by guessing "I bit off my nose to spite my face" rather than "I cut off my nose"? In googling the two phrases I discovered that "cut off" was much more common, but "bit off" is the way I've always heard it. Not that "bit off my nose" makes any logical sense--I think that's why I've always thought of it as a funny cliche. So was I the only one to lose points because of that?

Thanks very much for the further comments!

Except for one phrase which was a song title, all had to do with a common idiomatic expression having to do with body parts (hence the title), and then for most of them, I tried to add a quirky but hopefully logical twist. My goal was to try to tell a little tale, "How I Came Apart," via the phrases, and by the end, the main character, so to speak, would be fairly well dismembered.

The expression, "I cut off my nose to spite my face," just happened to be tailor-made for my WP all by itself, so I didn't have to mess with it. I did use a reference book to verify the expression, just in case. The book I used is called NTC's American Idioms Dictionary by Richard A. Spears.

Anyway, Lane, I'm sorry you lost points for that one phrase! Perhaps my clue for that one could have been better. Another clue for that phrase that I considered was "sharp temper?" That might have helped you to rule out "bite off" as opposed to "cut off."

I thought Lane's problem, like mine, was paying an arm and a leg for a plain old car instead of a BMW.
