Two more suggestions about the scoring...I mostly really like the changes, esp. that you lose points for guessing wrong now, but I think that if you can get 4750 points for coming in 50th, you should be able to get more than 5500 when you do well enough to come in 6th. There could be higher bonuses for finishing in the top 10 without taking away the thousands of points you could still get for finishing at #99.

I would also love it if guessing the puzzle correctly didn't count as a move! (I still like that you're penalized 3 moves if you guess WRONG)
It's always kind of disappointing when you can actually figure out a puzzle w/out any letters, and you're still 'penalized' one move.

Loved the 'numbers' puzzle this morning! =)

We agree too - only the letters should count as a move and not the guess itself.

Yep, I agree with all that. Guessing the answer should not count as a move!

I definitely think (incorrectly) solving should count as a move...maybe just not THREE moves.
Solving is where I usually drop several places in the standings (largely because I'm a lousy typist and crappy proofreader, though).

Yeah, I agree: Correctly solving a puzzle shouldn't count as a move. But I think the 3 move penalty for incorrectly guessing is about right.

I can kind of understand the point of not being charged a move for making a correct guess, but it really doesn't change anything. If we are all charged the same move for that guess, other than having a lower number of moves (which ALL of us would have), doesn't it all equal out anyway?? We all know that 5 of the moves were the actual guess.

Good point. And it just made me realize that if 5 of those moves are guesses and some people are solving the whole thing in 11-13 moves, that's pretty amazing! That means 6-8 letters for the whole puzzle. That's not even an average of 2 letters per puzzle! How do they do that???? I probably couldn't do that if they snuck my name into the puzzle. haha

Ha! =) Actually, names of players could make for a fun quiz.

It's true that pointwise it makes no difference since 5 of everyone's points are from their final, correct guess.
It's just a...personal satisfaction thing?
Like you said, if someone finishes in 14 moves, they did that with 9 letters, and I think it'd be nice if that's what was reflected on your score.

Shhhhh! don't tell anyone but I have a trivia quiz that is guess the sploofus player, based on their profiles, that is being reviewed. The problem is I submitted it on the 5th. It had 12 quizzes in front of it. The next day it went to 11 and has had 11 in front of it for 3 days. Its stuck. Anyway, if its a hit, I plan on doing several followups. I think it will encourage sploofusers to fill in their profiles as well as encourage us all to go read those profiles. If I can ever get the quiz out of the twilight zone.....

I agree, some people are just amazing. You know who you are, don't you? You little devils can click one letter and solve the puzzle. I think the current scoring system is just fine. To take away the three move penalty for a wrong answer and to take away the one move for a correct one could give these amazing ones an even greater advantage.

Rats - my wonderful clever quiz I mentioned above got rejected with this remark: I am very sorry but we can not approve quizzes that contain the likeness (including usernames) of other Sploofusers

So I guess a Word Puzzle with sploofusers would not be allowed either.

Sorry Eesus! I'm glad you tried it first--I was bummed when I first saw your post b/c I've been compiling info for one of those too!
That's too bad. It's a fun idea.

Oh, and aquamar--having your guess not being a move wouldn't give anyone an advantage--everyone's scores would just average 5 less than they usually are.
And I definitely think a 3 point penalty for a wrong guess is a good idea. (Even though I did it FOUR times tonight. Serves me right. =)
