On Wednesday, May 7th 2008, Microsoft released the long awaited Windows XP SP3. Almost immediately hundreds of users registered complaints ranging from complete crashes to looping reboots. Similar problems have accompanied previous service packs and are usually the result of conflicting software. I was one of those users. I would not recommend you download SP3 from windows update . It causes major problems. If you have automatic updates turned on,turn it off! Trust me you dont want this mess.

Thanks, Mitchy. Maybe it's not my fault that my husband's computer broke after all. I turned it off, and then it had a fatal error reading boot.ini when he tried to turn it back on. Where do you turn off automatic updates?

It hasn't given me any trouble. No more than anything else of theirs.

SP3 hasn't been automatically downloaded yet via Windows Update - it is scheduled to be so in early summer. The May 8 release was for manufacturers and others, where the glitches caused an uproar. Microsoft has been patching, fixing, etc. for a few weeks now. Presumably, knowing all the problems, Microsoft will delay auto downloads until all the bugs are fixed. But maybe best to err on the side of caution. Google to keep up with the latest news on this important issue.

(Find Automatic Update feature by going to Control Panel and clicking on Automatic Update).

Thanks for this. I am basically computer illiterate and have had TWO computers crash on me. (didn't hurt me a bit) I have a new computer and do not want to lose this one too. Any time something likes this happens, I sincerely hope that someone posts a message here.
