Just wanted to recommend a firm that does dog transportation. I had to get a German shepherd from North Platte (Nebraska) to near Boston. came to the house and picked up Gracie and delivered her to the new owner's front door four days later. The driver knew I was having a hard time saying goodbye to Gracie and he didn't rush me and was most kind. I had his phone number and could call him any time to see how Gracie was doing (after the first day she was riding up front with the driver!) ... when he reached the new owner's home, he spent about a half hour helping Gracie make the transition.

En route, if he has several dogs, he puts bedding down and sleeps in the van with the dogs. If he has just one dog, he gets a motel room. He stops a number of times a day to let the dogs get out and exercise and do their "business."

When he stopped to pick up Gracie all the dogs were licking their chops. He said he had just gone through Burger King and everyone had cheeseburgers!

Using the transport vs. shipping by air is several times more expensive but I can't help but feel that the dog is less traumatized by the journey, even though it takes longer.

However, I'm not sure it was all that much more for me. I would have had to travel halfway across the state to get her to an airport, buy a new crate to take to the airport to ship her in, plus the crate she was carried in. With the cost of gas now, I'm not sure I would have saved all that much to fly her

From what I learned from researching and talking to people who have used pet transports, not all transports are this pet-friendly so I am recommending only this one I know about.

This company is in Sidney, Iowa, but they travel coast-to-coast and criss-cross the U.S. picking up dogs and making deliveries along the way every few weeks. When he picked up Gracie he had a pit bull headed for New Jersey and a bull mastiff also headed for Massachusetts. He was picking up other dogs in Wisconsin.

Anyway, just wanted to give dog lovers another option if they have to ship a dog. I'm glad I spent the money to give Gracie a nice ride to Massachusetts!.
