I have not been following the WTHAI clues, so I was thrown off by the hint "I am a VERY successful business man". Has it been standard to use the present tense for someone who is dead?

I asked myself the same question. I would have said "was," but I don't know grammatical protocol for WTHAI.

I didn't even look at him because I knew he was dead. "I was" would've been a more actually helpful hint.

Congrats, Suzanne! Good get!

Ray Kroc just popped in my head because I had McD. for supper 2 nights in a row and the soda cup was still sitting on the table.

Well, the puzzle is "Who the heck AM I?" not "Who the heck WAS I?" So it seems perfectly appropriate to me to hint with an "I am..." statement.

I am I said
To no one there
And no one heard at all not even the chair
I am I cried
I am said I
And I am lost and I can't even say why
Leaving me lonely still

Sorry to have thrown anyone off with the tense! I did consider 'was', but went with 'am' for the reason Suzer stated.

What if he was still alive, but had gone bankrupt?

I'd've used a different sort of clue.

Perhaps for future, leaving the tense out would help and not confuse: A VERY successful businessman (leaving out "I am" or "I was"). Just a thought.
