Queen Ysabella

..and the Golden Palominos..........

" ........These splendid golden horses were favored by her Majesty Ysabella de-Bourbon, that beloved queen who pawned her jewels so the expenses of the expedition which discovered the New World might be paid. In the Remuda Real of Spain, Queen Ysabella kept a full hundred of these animals and as the chosen favorites of the crown, only the members of the royal family and the nobles of the household were permitted to ride them. A commoner might not even own one. It is on record that the Queen Ysabella sent a Palomino stallion and five mares to her Viceroy in New Spain, which is to say Mexico, to perpetuate the Golden Horse in the New World. From this nucleus, the blood spread to the Texas plains, and from Texas to California....."

Umbalio Paterewski: And if you don't know the name, you shouldn't be ashamed....but I guarantee you've seen his initials.

Paterewski was the one of the geniouses who revolutionized the overnight shipping business. In the early '70s Paterewski was toiling in his family delivery business in Memphis, Tenn., when the road manager for Elvis Presley called. The King had run out of scarves in the middle of his "Aloha" tour, which had gone far better than anyone anticipated. Elvis needed another two boxes of scarves delivered overnight: one to Fort Worth, and one to Denver. Plus, they had to be inconspicuously marked, so adoring Elvis fans wouldn't snag them in transit.

Paterewski accepted the challenge, placing the scarves in plain brown boxes. Owing to a favorable quirk of flight schedules, he realized that planes leaving Memphis late at night could be in both places the next morning, so he shipped them by air to the cities.

Finally, to prevent zealous Elvis fans from recognizing the content, Paterewski hid the mailing information beneath a sheet of paper telling the handlers where to find the info, bearing his initials.

The scarves were delivered, Paterewski became a major player, handling shipments for country music acts, and his instructions to package handlers became standaridzed.

That's why every package you receive these days is stamped, "This end UP."

Thought you'd like to know.

UQ is on the clock...good luck.

Clean-up time...

Okay so Un-O is not a famous person, but a card came, as the entrant freely admits with a smirk I suspect, so I'll suggest:

Una O'Connor.

Her imdb bio: Delightful character actress who held her own against such acting heavyweights as Charles Laughton, Boris Karloff, Tyrone Power, Barbara Stanwyck, and Sydney Greenstreet. Often cast by studio heads as comic relief thanks to her thick Irish accent and rubber-faced expressions, most notably in Universal's horror classics, Bride of Frankenstein (1935) and The Invisible Man (1933). Her final role was as the devoted housekeeper in Billy Wilder's Witness for the Prosecution (1957), a role she originated on stage. Her hilarious testimony during the trial is one of the film's highlights.

Xander Debates...well, it IS about a person. There's a long-standing schism among Buffy fans about the iconic vampire, and apparently there is no middle ground.

I'll certainly defer to anyone who's got a better XD...unless you're talking about the number 490, which is a different thread altogether.

Okay so XanthippE clearly cannot count, I'll suggest :

Xisa Lina Eich, a German TV actress
or
Xanthe Elbrick, the young British actress and winner of a BBC DRama 'Act Up' Award.

And as valid as William Kellogg is for WK I'd like to think of someone else...hmmmm.....who though...who has the initials WK...something very familiar about them....oh well it'll come to me.

Now onto XO.

Before I post Mr. Z. X. (which was almost impossible to find!!) I want to just add a Z P, one of my favorite actresses when I was wee (if I ever was). Zasu Pitts was a great silent film actress who later appeared as Elvira Nugent on the Gale Storm show in the late 50's....and I loved her. Waited up last night, but had to sleep and then go to work and missed Z P. Sorry. Had to get her in.

My hat is off to everyone who participated with such intellectual and research vigor! I never thought this would take off with so much popularity.
Very impressive display from everyone once again, but of course that shouldn't be any surprise considering the wealth of knowledge the people I meet here seem to possess.

So Bravo to one and all, and thank you for playing and appeasing me in this hopefully fun trivia task.

Onto the next fun idea....

just a thought.
maybe it would be possible to start a different thread for the two letter pairs.
The idea would be to find a word with the two letters in sequence in that order; but for the easy ones you'd look for TWO occurrences.
so Baal would work for AA.
but for AB you'd look for ABominABle. And ACk-ACk for AC.

I'm reluctant to start the thread --but if someone else thinks it a good idea please start the thread!

Barry
