I was debating posting this so early - although I suppose it's not early for everyone, is it? Anyway - if you're having your breakfast and/or get easily queasy, don't read on.

SO - I know that mixing mustard and warm water will give you a very effective emetic (will make you toss your cookies) but WHY does that work? If I can eat a spoonful of mustard with no ill effects, why does adding plain warm water make it so vile? (I usually didn't even need to drink it, just smelling it would do the trick.)

I was googling this last night and this morning and can't find an explanation, but I'm betting there's a Ms. or Mr. Science on the island who knows the answer.

Shauna: They're talking about mustard powder, not prepared mustard. I'm standing by to watch you put that spoonful of mustard in your mouth...

I believe you have to drink the diet coke before you swallow the Mentos. (Not that I have tried this. really)

Robin - most websites do say to use powdered mustard, but I always used plain yellow and it worked fine. Yeah, a spoonful of that would be pretty gross, but it still wouldn't make me lose my lunch. (Although it might very well make me lose a night's worth of shots, which was usually the sort of situation in which I needed this remedy. =)

Ken - when I was looking this up today I did also see a bunch of sites that said salt water works too.

But nobody knows why, huh? Ken, if YOU don't know then maybe it's inexplicable.

Mustard greatly increase the peristaltic movement of the stomach (muscle contractions). Mixed with water, mustard breaks down into certain chemicals and they act directly upon the gastric nerves and cause everything to come back up.

paraphrased from the Enc.Britannica.

Wow, I have to say I actually knew about NONE of this before this post. I wonder if it works for dogs...I've had several instances where they've swallowed something dangerous and we tried hydrogen peroxide with mixed results. I know one thing...I'm going to stick with ketchup and relish on hotdogs from now on!
