Another editor and I encountered problems entering player written word puzzles recently. We then learned that new code had been written for word puzzles to make them run more efficiently. Part of the new code limits phrase lengths to 75 characters instead of 80.

I will change the official WP authoring guidelines in the Hotwire thread to reflect this change.

Sorry for any inconvenience this has caused, but I'm sure we all will agree that anything that improves how Sploofus operates is a worthwhile change.

Crap. Back to the drawing board.

Aha, so that's why my puzzle came back saying it was too long & I recounted it & they all met the 80 requirement. Poop-a-doop. I'm not sure some of my quotes will fit now, back to the drawing board, indeed

my counting finger is still bandaged - it may be a while on rewrites!

Does this have to do with big words? Or a bunch of little ones? Oh dear. We just sent in 9 new ones (weeks of work) and hope our wonderful editor doesn't have to make a lot of changes.

Oh geez- I just sent a w.p. submission to my editor. "80 characters" might be a problem with one or two of them.

Oh what me think of that? It's been a palindromic day.

Bbear.. you sent in 9 new ones?.. I thought the instructions were 1 at a time... I was told that I couldn't submit a new one until the one already in the hopper expires. Is this a new rule I don't know about?

The editor is only looking at one at a time and is only looking at one after one has been published. He is not looking over multiple puzzles. Hope that clarifies; you are correct. We just went on a writing marathon over the past couple of weeks. So I guess now I'll need to go back over them because I do tend to write long ones...

There are certain problems when one writes in Microsoft Word and then does a cut-and-paste into Sploofus, but nothing beats it for word counting!

I put my WPs into a Word Document and look for the longest phrase. I select it and then look under TOOLS where there is a choice of "Word Count". When I click that I get some useful info - most useful for this purpose is the "Characters (with spaces)" - if it's over 75, I know I need to do some tweaking! I usually check the three longest phrase (the ones that travel the furthest across the page) as sometimes one that LOOKS shorter is actually more characters! Depends on the font used.

Word lengths need to be 13 letters max, but the 75 total is for all letters and internal spaces combined.

Lisap - At this point you and the other platinum members can just let the creative juices flow, and write as many as you would like. Just remember to submit them via the PM you got from your personal editor.

Just a note of clarification on a couple points.

Platinum members can only have one word puzzle in the official queue at a time. Once the puzzle has run, then your editor can put in a new one. This is to keep the allocation of time slots as fair as possible. However, when the word puzzle supply is short, like it is currently, you may see certain members having numerous puzzles running in a short period of time.

Platinum members do not have to wait to be re-invited to submit. Once their puzzle has run, they may submit another - and after that runs, another - repeating the cycle indefinitely.

If you have accidentally deleted your link, let us know via a support ticket and we will send you a new one.

Also, periodically check out the two related threads in Hotwire for discussions on word puzzle authoring.

FYI for checking phrase lengths, you can use the font "Courier" or "Courier New" to make all the letters have the same width (like a typewriter) so you can see which phrases are the longest.

Also I usually type a row of numbers like this:

and then type my phrases below this line, so that I can see where 75 characters ends up. (And I create my clues similarly.)

Many platinum WP authors may already have systems that work for them, but I offer these suggestions for anyone who is tired of counting every phrase manually!

And thanks again to all our WP authors!

Sorry if it confused anyone - I am currently on vacation and away from my normal Sploofing routine, so I told Bbear it was okay to send me as many WPs as they wanted. This gave me time to look them over and make suggestions at my leisure and have them ready to go. I am not entering any into the live list until the previous one has been played.

This was just me dealing with one of my platinum-people. This is NOT the accepted norm for submitting WPs

But platinum people...our list is looking a bit short...are you running out of ideas???
