LAS VEGAS

I'm taking a trip with some friends to Vegas. None of us has ever been there. For hotels we were thinking the Flamingo or New York New York. Any ideas or thoughts on better places or which of the two would be better? Any general info/tips on those who live there or have visited? I'd appreciate it.
Thanks, Bethany

Sorry, that should say info FROM those who live there, not ON those. Otherwise I sound like some stalker-spy.

I liked both the Venetian and the MGM Grand. When I head there next week, we are staying downtown. It was MUCH cheaper!

Have you tried the Vegas.com website yet? If you go under the Vegas Guide link, you can look up info by different parameters, like planning the trip for "The Bargain Hunter" and the hotel info will tell you what is closest to the hotel.
Both hotels you mention are above 3 1/2 stars. There are lots of cheaper hotels on the Strip - my friends that have been always say don't worry about getting an expensive room in a hotel with all the extras, unless you plan on spending the majority of your time there.
Have fun!

Regardless of where you stay, be sure to ride the coaster at New York New York!

This borders on freaky... because a group of my friends are also headed there, and we are deciding between those two hotels as well.

We are leaning heavily towards NYNY at the moment. My brother (a late 20s bachelor) told me I'd like it. He said it was a really fun place. He had no opinion of the other hotel. Though he did tell me to avoid the Hard Rock as it is something of a 20-somethings meat market!

The NYNY has slightly higher ratings on trip review websites for cleanliness (at the top of my priority list when choosing a hotel). It typically gets 4/5 stars while Flamingo gets 3/5. But the Flamingo is less $.

When are you going?

We're going the end of April (over my birthday weekend--yay!) My brother goes to Vegas strictly for casinos, where I'm not much of a gambler (I'm nervous to even use a wager token here--LOL) so that's how he chooses his hotel sometimes. I'm pretty sure we're staying at the Flamingo, but if I don't pass out from the jitters about flying, I might just roller coaster riding, Kimmie

I'll be there teh weekend after next...that would be superbowl weekend AND the weekend of the big UFC Fight (I'm not nearly as excited about that as my boyfriend!!)...andway, we're staying at the NY, NY. Love it there. Stayed att he Luxor a month or so back. Loved it. I'd say, for the price, those are probably my two recommendations.

We are going to Vegas in March, staying at the MGM Grand because that's where Bon Jovi is playing that weekend.

If food matters to you (it always matters to me!) I strongly suggest going to chowhound.com and looking up places to eat excellent food. We found a Thai restaurant that way there - it was fairly near The Strip - and it was incredible. It was in a really strange strip mall of Asian churches, and was among the best Thai food I have ever had.

We were there this summer and we stayed at Terribles. 2 mionutes from the strip, older hotel, but nice rooms...$39.99 a night. Decent casino, Best book of coupons when you sign up for the players club of any casino. It has two free buffets, two for one spins, match plays, and a two for one room coupon.
We would stay there again in a minute.

I have friend who go there frequently and they say the RIO is the best deal because it is just off the main strip, so they offer more for less. Food is great and less expensive. I have stayed in the Hilton a few times and the Riviera. I am going to stay at the RIO next. They convinced me. My pick for the best show in town in Lance Burton in his theater at the Monte Carlo.

I'd sugest the Mirage - nothing but good service - couldn't complain about anything.

The Rio is one of my favorite places in Vegas. Lots of fun, great restaurants and the rooms are huge and fantastic! It is off the Strip, but there are so many shuttles, it is never a problem.
Other favorite places I have stayed at are the Monte Carlo, Treasure Island (that is where I was married 10 years ago) but mostly we stay at the Rio.
If you want great margaritas for cheap, try Palace Station. They have GREAT room rates. You are off the Strip again, but shuttles and taxis are the way to go.
I'm not a huge fan of the Flamingo or the MGM, but that is just personal preferance.
Hope you have lots of fun! As you can see, we go all the time to Vegas.
