About six months ago, I thought I remembered reading that it might be possible to have the challenger in a Showdown be able to pick the category and let the challengee be aware of what was coming. This would definitly would change the whole showdown experience. Is there any Sploofus Hierarchy that can give any input into this. It would be fun. tks Liam

All we can say is that at this point it is not an option. We cannot speak to what Justin may be planning for the future.

I don't know, Bill. If the challengee didn't like the category they could just let the seven days go by. At least now, you have think about what possible questions you could get. Makes the showdown more interesting that way.

Donna, I see what you are saying, but if you are putting up a bunch of points, why not at least have an idea of what's coming. I've been in a bunch of Showdowns and at least one third of them has wound up a Stalemate. The speed factor with the Sploofus scheme of things causes a lot of careless errors. I have lost five or six showdowns with right answers but the person challenging me was faster. I think if you are willing to lose 10% of your total points, you should know what is coming.

As it stands now, the "gamble" and risks you take issuing showdowns are like playing slot machines; blackjack; poker; etc.

You know you might have some odds on your side- but you don't know for sure what's coming.

I'm cool with whatever changes are done in the future- if any.

I'd settle for having the Showdown avoid my blocked category and the blocked category of my opponent. I'd be more willing to gamble if I know my blocked category isn't in the mix!

I love showdowns, especially when I'm the defender and can't lose any points. Anyway, Bill, I kind of hate to disagree with you since you're sporting the avatar of one of my favorite heroes , but for me, I think being able to choose the category for a showdown question would remove some of the excitement from a duel. As a challenger, I'd always choose my strongest categories, and I'd always try to pick defenders who appeared weak in my strong categories. That would seem to give me too much of an advantage, in my opinion, and after awhile, it might become sort of ho hum.

However, what I *would* like to see is the ability to exclude one's weakest category from a showdown when you're the challenger. For me, that would be sports. So far I've been very lucky in showdowns and only received two sports questions, (got them both wrong.)

I totally agree with you. Since only the challenger's points are at risk, the challenger should get to decide the category. I don't challenge anymore, but I would if I could pick the challenge category. In my opinion the current "Showdown" system has the consequence of minimizing the number of challengs.

I totally agree about minimizing challenges. Right now I have 136 Showdown Tokens, and I don't plan to use a singel one of them or any additional ones I get under the current system. I've opted out of the Music category for my TQOTD since I doubt that I could recognize a title or singer of anything that is as recent as 25 years ago. I certainly don't plan to lose 10% of my total points on a Music question, or Movies, Geography or Sports, for that matter. I have no clue what use there is for the points I've accumulated, but I just know I don't want to lose them on a showdown.

I also think it would be an idea to challenge anybody who is ahead of you. Example: I am #144, I want to challenge the #100 person, if they accept (and points are established) , why not. I'm not saying to wager your entire total, but up to 10% of challenger's total. I think there was talk of this during last winter in the shout, ask Chickie.

I think that if we could challenge anyone above us, then some folks would be targeted disproportionately because of their level, or rank, or personality, or avatar, or ....

Some folks would get buried in Showdown challenges, while others would go without. In my opinion, the current system seems more "fair" (relatively speaking)...

Also - in my opinion, some people are thrill-seekers and gamblers, and others aren't. If you don't want to take the risks and use your tokens, it doesn't mean the system needs to be changed. It just means you aren't one of the gamblers.

Say Big Dave, this was mentioned because it was discussed last year. There were a lot of things discussed last year and a lot of us waited over a year to get what we were promised.

I like the way things are now. It would be nice if the exempt categories applied to the showdowns though.

Bugging? Nah, just a nudge. And you'll probably get another
chance next week, though it seems you're averse to taking

Some fellow named Megadyl just moved ahead of me. Hmmmm.

He has a puzzle that's right up your alley, Mr. Bill:

Megadyl and I have gone the route a few times already. I think we're 1-1 against each other. I have a book on my new favorite game already. Don't think I'm conservative with Showdowns, I don't trust the new system 100% yet when challenging. Twice I was right with answers but was told I was slow. No time was given and I was told it was a glitch we all had to contend with. I don't know about you, but I'm not dumping 50 million without good proof I lost. I'll go American sports and World events all day long with showdowns if they allowed it. Buzz me when you're feeling lucky. BTW Megadyl is pretty quick.
