POINT FOR CREATING SQUARES

Have been told there are no points for creating a trivia square. I find that interesting, since they take time, require some research and multiple clues.

Considering the assinine kerblunks that folks obviously write in four seconds (i.e. ones with one word clues and one word answers) that earn thousands and thousands for essentially doing nothing, this doesn't seem right.

Any thoughts?

No points for creating WP's either....

Guess we do it for the love of the game.

If you go to the Leaderboard pull-down menu and look at Trivia Square Author leaders for the month of July, Bbear has 2,130 points. I'm not sure what your Trivia Square authoring total points were prior to July.

You do get points, they're just not showing up the way quiz points do. I think Justin is working on that.

From my perspective, we *are* awarded points for creating WPs, since we're allowed to take our own. We get 5000+ points. Plus, every time one of our WPs appears, we get to be in the spotlight of a major Sploofus event. And we get pats on the back from fellow members. Seems cool to me.

As for the Kerblunks, my understanding is that they're supposed to be designed to be light and quick, something to do if you're too tired to take a quiz but still want to take some sort of puzzle. But if a puzzle is easy to take doesn't necessarily mean it was a breeze to create. For example, I've already spent a couple of hours working on one but haven't decided yet if it's really Kerblunk-worthy or not based on the guidelines, or if I should rework it.

P.S. My note about points for WPs was in reply to Revdodd's post, in case that wasn't clear. So, Rev, if you haven't been taking your own puzzles, you've been missing out!

I've noticed a pretty distinct difference in the ratings for my recent ker-blunks according to the revised guidelines as compared to the ones I did at the start of beta - I wonder if it is because they are so simple?

What difference are you noticing? Lower ranking now that more people are taking them? The beta testers may have been more inclined to rate games higher because they are long-timers, or quiz authors, or they know you, etc. etc. Just a theory....

Oh heck no, Geri! I'm all for getting the points. And I'm not sure how Justin and theoverlords could award extra points for WP creation, since it would skew the monthly standings severely.

I'm just happy so many creative folks have been added to the WP cauldron. And I think it's safe to say they do it without regard of the points. It's a hoot to see your work filled in one block at a time...be it WP or crossword.

Maybe some showdown tokens instead of points for writing?

I already have 93 showdown tokens I won't use .. just what I would need, MORE showdown tokens. Thanks, I'll pass on those. Now if we could get payment in chocolates, I'd be all for that!

Ohhhh, I see now, in your earlier post, you were talking about not getting *extra* points for WP creation, aside from the 5000+ we get for taking our own. Sorry that I misunderstood!

Indeed, I feel the same way, and you're right in that I'd continue to create WPs whether or not I received any points. When the offer was extended to Platinum members to write WPs, I signed up right away, and that was before I knew we could take our own puzzles. I really enjoy the process of writing them.

Totally agree that the WPs are great lately. I know when we write one it can take hours and hours to finalize it.

My original thought was about the people that write 10 or 12 stupid Kerblunks in a day; all that required no thought or research other than a quick look on Wiki. They get like a bejillion points because so many folks take them (not me, I refuse) because they are easy points to obtain.

I agree that writing good squares and WPs are great brain food and just plain fun but there simply seems to be "an unbalance" in the point system. Just my three cents (inflation and all that)

I think that the Ker-Blunks are getting a bad rap here. The whole idea is that they are supposed to be quick and easy.

We used to have FITB quizzes but it soon became obvious that these are a different sort of game than quizzes with thoughtful questions asking for actual answers. Justin created the Ker-Blunks to provide a place for the FITB style quizzes, that so many people loved to write and so many folks love to take!

They're only points!

If it's decided to award chocolates- I nominate peppermint patties.

This is a reply thread to Editor Sploofizz’s message. You are so correct in your comment “They’re only points”. Sometimes competition greed for scoring, can over rule the greater qualities of Sploofus which is a mind enriching opportunity to write quizzes on any subject, as well as a meeting place to share views, jokes, problems, and everything else. So next time you feel dejected that you are not flying high on the Leaderboards, remember what Sploofizz said, and consider the bigger picture of Sploofus and what it offers.

I know it's only points but I do think quiz authors in whatever format should be awarded points for their hard work. I'm not sure whether they should be included in WP monthly totals or not but budding authors who are trying for a top 10 finish might be shy of submitting because even though you get your 5000 you have no chance for a 500 or 1000 point bonus. Haven't written a crossword but the look like they'd be time consuming to write, I know WP's are. Points please, OK, pretty, pretty please, with sugar on top

To clear up my responses on this thread: my comments are about the original poster's view of kerblunk quizzes and their authors. So to that I say again, ok, whatever, I understand you hate kerblunks, your point is well made about that.

Authors do get points for writing Ker-Blunks and Trivia Squares (it may not look like it yet, but it's the recording that is the glitch, not the points, I think). And if there are no points being awarded at this time, then that is in the works, I am sure.

However, authoring Word Puzzles is NOT an official Sploofus, point-getting activity. It is a perk for Platinum members that was dreamed up by the editors to help us keep up with the WP queue. Editors have been authoring these for years with absolutely no compensation (and a lot of flack!). There is no benefit to writing one except the glory of seeing your puzzle live and getting all the nice feedback. We tried to make that very clear.

If anyone thinks being on the WP leaderboard for the month is more prestigious, then they shouldn't write the WP's. No big deal. Choose your own path to fame and 'fortune'

Points for chocolate indeed. Best of all, you don't need Sploofus to record them for you; they're implanted right in your waist and glutei ....

I write puzzles because I enjoy it. The points are a perc, for sure. Would I still write them if we got no points? Yes!

Sure, I may not be the sharpest knife in the Sploofus drawer - but Sploofus quizzes make me sharper.

But doggone it - sometimes I'm sick of concentrating - or I may only have a few minutes to peek in and see what's going on.

Kerblunks were made for me and maybe others like me in those situations. KBs have a proper and fun place here.

If they're not your thing, I bet everybody understands. And I'm sorry that some people think they are below them. A lot of quizzes here are way above my pay grade. But I sure enjoy learning from them!
