I would like to thank those responsible fore this site. I am sooooo addicted and I've only been here 2 weeks. However, I am having difficulty finding out about things - such as:

What to do with the showdown tokens
What all the different badges/awards are on peoples profiles
Other general help and/or tips

So, I am missing something? I keep looking for pages and sometimes I find something that helps, but then I don't seem to be able to find it again....

Welcome to Sploofus Island! I've only been here myself since March. I see you've already won a blue diamond during a WordMatch, congratulations!

Anyway, here's a link to the "Sploofus Survival Guide:"

You can read information in it on showdowns, wager tokens, etc. Note that some information provided is out of date. For example, your Trivia Question of the Day (TQOTD) does *not* get increasingly more difficult as you advance to higher levels. I'm at level 9.3, for example, and could get the same question as someone who's at level 25.3. It's just all random. Besides, to me, "difficulty" is subjective. Some questions that I find very easy due to my background might be difficult for someone else and vice versa.

By the way, you can also find the "Sploofus Survival Guide" by clicking on MySploofus, then clicking on Trivia Showdowns over on the right hand side of your screen under Links, then clicking on the link provided in the introduction to Showdowns.

There's a lot of information that's not in the Guide, and I would imagine that at some point, it will be updated whenever editors have time to do so. If you're not already aware of it, by the way, all of the editors here on the site are volunteers.

As to category proficiency badges, those are awarded for answering a certain percentage of TQOTD correctly. Since you're very new, you'd pretty much have to answer all of your questions correctly 100% of the time for awhile in order to keep any badges you earn. Here's Justin's (the site's creator, owner and all-around Trivia alchemist) explanation for how the badges work, along with the link to the thread on it:

"How it works: "Category Proficiency Badges"

When one first begins playing Sploofus, it is extremely easy to have lots of badges because you have only been asked a few questions in each category. New players only have to answer 3 or 4 questions correctly in a particular category to show 100% proficiency (60% is even easier).

Veteran players who have been served hundreds of questions in each category are at a severe disadvantage to the new players.

To solve this problem, and allow newer player's badges to carry the same significance as a veteran player's badge, the accuracy percentage is adjusted depending on how long you have been playing Sploofus.

Here is the minimum percentage cutoff for diplaying badges, depending on how long you have been Sploofusing:

Less than 2 weeks: 100% accuracy in category
2-4 Weeks: 97% minimum accuracy in category
4-6 Weeks: 94% minimum accuracy in category
6-8 Weeks: 91% minimum accuracy in category
8-10 Weeks: 88% minimum accuracy in category
10-12 Weeks: 85% minimum accuracy in category
12-14 Weeks: 82% minimum accuracy in category
14-16 Weeks: 79% minimum accuracy in category
16-18 Weeks: 76% minimum accuracy in category
18-21 Weeks: 73% minimum accuracy in category
21-25 Weeks: 70% minimum accuracy in category
25-29 Weeks: 67% minimum accuracy in category
29-33 Weeks: 64% minimum accuracy in category
33-37 Weeks: 60% minimum accuracy in category
37-41 Weeks: 55% minimum accuracy in category
42 Weeks or older: 50% minimum accuracy in category"

(Thread is in the Hotwire forum.)

I hope that helps!

Thanks Geri, yes it did help. I managed to find the survival guide immediately after I posted my question.

I'm really curious about the star shaped "badge/award" and what the torches actually relate to. I had figured out the category awards already.

Can you shed any light on these?

Thanks again

And welcome, Odge, to the island. (if you wonder why we call it an island, there used to be a picture of an island on our home page - hopefully Justin will bring it back but I know it's not a priority with all the other things he has to do).

It certainly is addictive and as you see from the help you've been given, most people here are really nice. Just keep coming around, check out the Salty Dog and add your 2 cents' worth.

The thing I enjoy about this site is that most of the time is positive and encouraging. Heaven knows, we all need a lot of that these days.

Again, Welcome.

Thanks for the warm welcome Salzypat. I've been checking things out and finding my way around - wow, this site is enormous.....

(I really like the pic of Sami Jo. I have the same problem, but my dog tears up the duvet...)

Just a small bit of advice: fork over the (less than) fifteen bucks and you will get three wonderful things:
1. Popups will go away!
2. You can play the word puzzle twice a day! (It rolls at 7:00 Central)
3. Justin will buy me lunch (won't ya Justin)

Welcome aboard, and I'll amen BBear's suggestion.

If you like trivia and puzzles but hate popups, the gold-level membership is a great way to reward yourself.

Hope you have a long and happy stay on the island!

Welcome Odge! You've arrived at the best of times. Have a great time exploring the site. And now that you're Golden, you can use your wager tokens, and showdown tokens if you have the nerve. I can sense that you are going to become a millionaire very quickly!

Thanks Alice, here's hoping.

I have another question....

Why do the quizzes I've authored say they've been taken more times than show on the leaderboard?

For example, the quiz "A story for bird lovers" shows 8 takers on the leaderboard, but 12 takers on the trivia games page?

Just curious...

Thanks again.

This version of Sploofus is quite new, and all the bugs haven't been worked out yet. That is one of them. I think Justin's list of stuff to do must be a mile long, and the editors keep telling us that he has to eat, and sleep, and work, and mundane things like that. So it may be awhile before that feature is fixed. Just ignore that column!

Hey Alice, thanks for your reply. I wondered if that was the case....

Hi Odge, this is a theory so it may not be accurate, but it might explain what you are seeing: The leaderboard is for people who completed the quiz, the quiz takers list might include everyone who started it and then bailed without finishing.
