ELMENDORF AIR FORCE BASE

Anyone know what that circle thing is in the top left of the picture?

I think it's a satellite dish cover, so that "enemy" satellites can't see it or which way its pointing. I think that one supports AWACS communications. I could be wrong, but that base is known for housing an AWACS simulator.

I took a ride on Google Earth and it is a satelite dish surrounded by some sort of fencing.

I know what you mean about things like that which you're not sure how to explain. Ever been to DFW Airport? (Dallas / Fort Worth)

There are a couple of things there that look like large, elevated flying saucer landing pads.

I guess they are some kind of radar or satellite something, but they sure are cool looking. You can see it here (use the 2nd closest zoom and click 27 times at the middle bottom of window to move the view down till you see it.

http://www.mapquest.com/maps?city=Irving&state=TX&cat=DFW#a/maps/l:Dallas-Fort+Worth+International+Airport+(DFW):1530+W+18th+St:Dallas:TX:75261:US:32.89085:-97.04118:address:/m:hyb:12:32.89085:-97.04118:0::/io:0:::::f:EN:M:/e

If you know what it is, feel free to educate me.

I used to play bridge at Elmendorf Airforce Base when I lived in Anchorage. I don't remember driving past that big shield. Must have been away from the road.

Jank, that thing is a Maverick VOR/DME which is a type of radio navigation technology for aircraft.

VOR stands for VHF Omni-directional Radio Range
DME stands for Distance Measuring Equipment (which, by the way, was invented by an Australian)

GoogleEarth features a good photo taken from ground level. http://www.panoramio.com/photo/4029232

Z and P - LOLOL and thanks for the info.
I lost my car once at DFW once - 45 minutes of sheer terror (it was on one of those "in between" levels. I was more afraid I had lost my mind than I was afraid that someone stole the thing.
Sigh....

Boy, Pepperdoc! I'm sure glad you found your car! But where could they lose a whole parking lot for two years???

I've heard those missing parking lots are a real problem at DFW.

You are correct! When you KNOW you've parked your car on a certain lot and the car isn't there, OBVIOUSLY, they've moved the parking lot!

I checked with my son in the Air Force, and he believes that this is the latrine that was constructed to the specs set forth by the USO when Rosie O'Donnell paid a visit to our troops there.
