WONDERING WHY.....

When I logged in this morning, only 15 out of the first 100 players were paying members, only 5 of which were platinum. I saw several long-standing Sploofus members in there who's memberships are now regular status. I was just curious why.

And why has the membership total dropped below 43,000 when it was up over 44,000 just a month ago?

I don't want to "knock" Justin or the site certainly. Growth brings change and many of these changes are not liked by the "old" members-refer to the posts over the last few weeks or months. I, like Suzer, am debating whether to renew my paid membership which comes due soon. Not sure of the reason "why" as many things in life baffle me. But do know the "warmth" has left the site-clueless as to the solution-perhaps should remember the words-not exact- of JFK "It you don't have an answer-don't criticize. Nothing the matter with being young but believe they are the ones who now basically-love many of you- set the standards here. Find the "chat" forums now close to boring-not sure what factor made them not so in the past-once again- just my opinion-Linda

There's plenty of warmth, Linda, come here and give us a hug and pass the cheese, I'll have a nibble.

I think it's this glaring white screen. It has me squinting in 10 minutes. In half an hour I have a headache. It was the very first thing I complained about and is still my number one gripe now.

Even ahead of the vocabulary drought.

Yes, dear, now that you've admitted Smaug adds spice to the island, you have to go and kill yourself.

He's definitely an acquirable taste. I acquired him a while ago.

Don't him like I do you, but the isle would be a less cheery place without him in his raincoat down by the junior high.

I will continue to be a paying member as long as I continue to come to Sploofus to play games or just hang around.

I went Platinum last summer mainly because I was heavily into the Word Round scene and got lured by the idea of unlimited tries at it.

I’m not so much into it any more and I’d rather take the Word Puzzles than write them, so I probably won’t continue as Platinum. It doesn’t make sense to pay 3x as much for something you don’t use.

Also, as Linda mentioned above, the changes have been many and for the most part I think the site has improved.

What has not improved however is the lack of response to some of the issues players have whether it is game enhancement suggestions or privacy issues such as the one I reported July 10th.

I find it very concerning that I was told it would be fixed “right away” and it’s going on two weeks. Not my interpretation of “right away”, but obviously someone’s.

There is definitely a lack of community here anymore - I find it a bit depressing. And I do get perturbed when I'm totally ignored. I do enjoy some of the new games but there's a lot of websites with games. We need to get the community-feel back.

My, my. Must be the hot weather getting everyone down.

Me, I love this site and would be very unhappy if my friends left it. Costs less than 35 cents a day, keeps my mind going and I have having a ball writing the squares and looking up the pictures, although no one plays them and they ain't worth squat for points.

People are resistent to change but this particular change, in my mind, was fabulous. Sure, it has quirks.

I have done a square which is in the queue and will renew your faith in findings the regulars here.

And Smaug...I think you're hot.

Be of good cheer.

If you have suggestions on how to do that, Lodi, would so appreciate hearing them. You and I have had a couple of "rows" but they were resolved and would be devasted if you were no longer here-somethings missing perhaps it the sense of an disconnected "crowd" rather than a close-knit group at odds or not-Linda

I, too, am getting a little bored with things here. The Word Rounds are sewed up too quickly with the same names and their speedy responses. I never expect to do the Word Rounds in under 20 seconds!

Sometimes I wish the zephy fingered folks wouldnt do the games until they are half over. They surely know they are going to be on the final listing! The other day I thought I was ending up one game but instead got in on the beginning of the next one and there I was in first place with 100% for 5 minutes or so... it made my day! I knew it wouldnt last and that was okay but at least for a while I was in the spotlight.

I dont spend much time with the quizzes any more either. It bothers me that most are on movies or music. Maybe I'm like Linda, getting too old for all this! Even Salty Dog isn't as fun as it used to be!

Indeed she is - that's our Chickbref1 aka Chickenbreath, aka Kelly.

She's a devoted mom and busy with her kids' summer ball teams, and she was recently away on computer-free vacation.

At least some of the quiet is because it's summer and people are out doing things and going places.

OMG - call the press. I agree with Smaug about something other than politics.

When you're struggling to pay for gasoline and trying to afford a vacation (even if to just see the family rather than something more expensive like Disneyworld), the luxuries start disappearing - and in that case, Sploofus is a luxury. Maybe when vacations are over, they'll upgrade again (though as long as gasoline is so high, so is everything else).

I agree I'm not so thrilled with the white background, but that would never stop me from reading. And I think Sploofus is so much more exciting with all the new stuff. There's so much more to do (though so much less time to do it in the summer).

My vote is on the economy being the real culprit here.

I, too, had to work a while to become accepted - just as you do in any family. Part of the trouble may be that the site has about doubled since I've been a member, but it seems like it's mainly the same ones posting to Salty Dog, not too many new ones have joined in.

So, what was it on the "old" Sploofus that made it feel like family? I know some of you got together in person, like Lodi's float coming up in a few weeks. Even though you had some inside jokes, I still didn't feel excluded.

I think maybe some of it was the chatter that went on in Salty Dog at night. I loved it when Smaug and Lodi, Felix and Heidi and some of the rest of you got into a war of words. I'm not quick enough to join in but someone has to sit on the sidelines and applaud anyway, so I had a role. Unfortunately, in my opinion, a few times the exchanges may have gone just a little over the edge and that brought the scolding from the editors and Justin. Seems like we should be able to have some of that back. I know -- when you start to censor, who's the judge of what is offensive and what isn't.

Anyone else want to jump in with ideas? Seems only logical that before you can fix something you have to pinpoint the problem.

To Rita's point, in the two years I have been here I've never been under 20 seconds in a wr or wm, while there are a select few who never have a round over 20 seconds, it would be nice to have some sort of system where the speed demons or experts or the ones who have access to so called flukes and the rest of us could be separated into different tiers so those of who aren't as blessed would have a chance to be in the top 10 on occasion, and I would also like to see some sort of separation between those of us who refuse to google wps and those who always google them, maybe having scores reflect times as well as number of moves. Just my humble opinion and will probably never happen though

Really think it boils down to "small" as opposed to "large"-no comment from you please,Smaug. With growth has come disassociation. If you are pretty new this will perhaps not bother you as it does those of us whoi were here almost from the onset. We could always stage a "disaster" as catastrophe seems to bring utter strangers together with the common goal of survival-don't even pretend to have an answer just feeel something "missing"-Linda

I, too, have felt the difference. It doesn't seem as much "family" as it used to - but I don't know why! I know I have to spend so much time making up quizzes to remain high in the quiz author category that I seem to have lost my interest in taking them. And yes - they all seem to be on TV (which I NEVER watch) or movies - which I like to see but don't that often due to finances. I think if it weren't for the encouragement of my friend, Linda (Maurlin), who got me on here in the first place, I certainly wouldn't be platinum, nor would I be nearly as active. I WANT OUR FAMILY BACK - AND THE ISLAND, TOO!

My 5 cents (see...everything has gone up).
(1) I find it difficult to take quizzes of authors who have written more than 40 or 50 quizzes. The main reason for that is the need to wade through many pages of quizzes listed alphabetically that I have already taken, taking up space with lines through them. I lose interest after going back 5 or 6 pages of an author's quizzes .
(2) Once I start a quiz, through the time I rank it, send a comment, and click on other quizzes by the same author, I have often forgotten who the author is. The author's name is no where listed. Writers become anonymous.
(3) The various categories are shown to the side, without listing any quizzes included in them. Although it is probably simple to click on a category, I don't have the motivation to do that.. Previously I could browse through various categories shown on the front page listing titles and and choose quiz titles that appealed to me. More author anonymity!
(4) Although the "Add A..." topics were fun at first, and I used to add to them, that's pretty much all I see now in Salty Dog and I don't bother looking at the dumb lists any more. They've stopped having any meaning to me. Too many rules regarding what to add. No originality is encouraged. While writing this it occurred to me that I have not clicked on any of the other Chat categories in 2.0 except perhaps Hotwire updates. Because of the dropdown menu, I don't bother with the other categories like I used to.
(5) I feel uncomfortable sending a personal note after taking a quiz since it will be posted for all to see. That tends to stop me from a friendly comment meant for a friend.
(5.!) Plats used to be the only ones with personal avatars. Now all can have them, and I can't upload the one I had in Old Sploofus. Somehow I find myself limited to the ones already programmed into the Avatar Library.

I've used up my 5 cents worth, plus, and I've run out of pennies. I'm not sure whether I will use any for Plat when mine expires.

There is a little button under the "comment" after you do a quiz and rate it. If you click on that it only goes to the writer.

I agree with a few of you.

Heidi - there is possibly a great deal in what you say about the number of people now playing. Once upon a time, there was only a few neighbourly discussions (and arguments): with the town getting larger, naturally the neighbourliness lessens to cordiality. (I hope that's not a precursor of Sploofus v3.0 - and doubt that it is!)

There's also now a large number of micro-climates - differing groups with differing interests, those who write WP's now as well as participate in them, ever increasing numbers of people from different time zones - instead of us all sharing the same weather. I know from personal experience that it can be hard to catch up with folks who are eating breakfast as I'm going to bed, let alone those who prefer umbrellas to parasols. (You can tell I'm about to go on holiday can't you?)

Smaug - (and at least one other person) hits another nail on the head: money is tight everywhere, so somethings have got to go.

And it probably IS the weather too: schools are out, vacations are being taken and maybe people are playing outside instead of cowering over a screen, shouting at that a$$hole who's just done a WR in 3 seconds...

The good thing is we're all here talking about it, so even though we might be feeling a little lonely or disassociated at least we're feeling it together.
Sounds like a family to me! (even Uncle Smaug, or Tommy's Uncle Ernie as I've come to think of him...)

It's SUMMER!!! With kids home, vacations, and great weather, the computer must take a back seat.
Having said that... I believe that the chat forum did take a rather boring turn since I joined over a year ago. There are more nit-pickers and complainers these days (There is still that group of awesome people, too. ) Anyway, the variety of puzzles makes this site fun, and I decided to just bypass the droning posters. So...I'll stay around...

I've been here going on four years in September...Seen a lot of changes both good and bad. A lot of good friends have come and gone on here also...The island isn't what it use to be and sometimes changes are good. yeah, we've had our ups and downs on here and yes, some have left in a huff and not returned. I know there are a lot on here that I consider my second family and they have helped me through some really rough patches in the last four years. Some of the newbies here just don't seem to have that sense of family that I found here when I first came.
When school starts back I'll have to curtail my time on here as I have one in band and the other in ROTC and I volunteer my time to help out with both...Plus there are ballgames on Friday night that I attend to show support for both programs...But I will always know that I can come here and talk to my extended family about things and know that you all are here for me when I need you...
Yeah, there could be some improvements still and I for one don't want to loose the feeling of family that we once had on the site...
So, with that in mind I wish everyone rainbows and sunshine...and know that I love you all very very much....

I, too, find the white screen very hard on the eyes -- and I also put in a suggestion early in Beta testing that a little color be added to the background. I don't feel that any of my concerns have been addressed. And I think that Justin's disappearing into the background has contributed to the change in atmosphere. I understand that he's busy -- I'm just saying that when we heard from him more often, we felt like we were "in" on whatever was going on.

I, too, am tired of the "add a something" threads and have stopped reading them. I try to remember to check the other forums once in a while -- but almost nobody posts there anymore.

But I must say that this thread seems more like the kind of connection that we used to make. I'm glad I read this one.

More salt needed in the salty dog! Honestly, Smaug, whatever it is you are doing that is keeping you from getting some hot topics going - stop it! People should complain on trivial tangents or ask the audience. Leave Salty to some fun exchanges between members. I do think that the summer has played a part in less partcipation in chats. Plus theres so much more for the non beta people to do here now that's new. Hopefully things will return soon to the way they were. Salty was one of my favorite parts of Sploofus - lately it's become a little boring.

I have to say to all of you old timers (which I hope to be one day), that I spend a lot of time, that I use to spend taking quizzes, just listening to you.
All of you are so clever, witty and fun. Even when you are sparring.
I don't join in much because I don't think I'm witty enough to hold my own and would just sound silly. Please don't give up, you (all of you) keep my mind active and alert. You bring up things I wouldn't have thought of if I hadn't tuned in to the chat.

Geesus...you're all a bunch of whiners. Big wheel of cheddar anyone?

I think I read that Heidi misses me and Smaug. The world is coming to an end soon obviously.

I'm not on nearly as much as I used to be. Summer's here and been out and away alot, plus I hate most of you people.

My two cents...the damn shout box is way too friggin small. I have 20/20 vision and the size of if along with the aforementioned white background is painful to read. ALSO...AHEM...the "who's playing" at the bottom missing is a real bummer. When I insult someone, I prefer to do it to their face (or, in cyberspace, when I know they're on the puter).

So enough with my bitching...Oh yea, let's bring back swearing too...I so miss that!!

Another thing - when a church is small, everybody knows everybody, and they have SS together and socials together. Then when they grow to megachurch size, there's no way to know everyone or get to know them closely, so we break into small groups and those groups are close.

Here we now have groups - and if you don't belong to the group, you're not allowed in to read what people there are writing.

In a big way, I miss that - that we're not all out here together and we can read or not read what everyone is saying.

On the other hand, maybe Sploofus has just grown so large that the only place to find your community closeness/community feelings is in your groups, instead of here. It may be the only way to get back what some of you feel you lost.

I've never felt the community feeling so many of you who have been here longer than I felt (I've been here 2 years).

Did you Betas feel a sense of community since you were a small group? I seem to remember the same disappointment coming from someone (Lodi?) during Beta testing too.

When you grow - it's a good news, bad news thing. You have choices to make. It's just not ever going to be the same.

Amen Chick! The print is too small - and yet we're teased with the "preference option" of large print. Doesn't matter - nothing changes.

And that's the other thing I agree with you guys on.

Nothing gets fixed. Surely one thing a week could get repaired. Something. But our frustrations go on and on. Some are little nitpicky things.

But the white, the little print, the KB "click on other games go back to the main page" things make you just want to go back and mow - or pack another box.

I think there is still a feeling of being disconnected from not having the "players online list" that always showed wherever you were in Sploofus. Yes, you can still see who's online now...but you have to navigate and scroll pages to get there. The friends list will show which are your friends are online, which is a nice feature...

Never underestimate customer sat issues with website navigation. The fewer the clicks to find something, the happier people are (usually).

Part of what's happening could be growing pains. I think a couple of things were put in place to stimulate more player interaction: groups to foster chats on compatible topics, and tournaments and WTHAI to generate buzz about the topics, who's leading, etc.

We gained some things with 2.0 and lost some familiar navigation and "island" feeling from 1.0.

I can't really comment about the warm family feeling you are talking about since I've only been sploofusing for a year or so and joining in the chats for a much shorter time. I took out Gold membership so I could use my wager tokens but not having ads which slow down and otherwise mess up my compuer has been great too. The changes have been great too. They make the whole site more user-friendly. OK so some features that we used to have aren't available now.
Eesus, I have noticed the fall in membership too which I assume is mainly due to Justin's purge on multiple memberships. Have you ever picked a letter in the player directory and noticed just how many are only on level 1 and the long lists of very similar user names all or most of whom are also only on level 1. While some are probably people who tried it once and it wasn't there thing some look like multiple memberships to me too. I have also notice that the number of people online seems to only fluctuate between around 75 to 200 or so and most of the most popular quizzes get 200 - 300 takers. So how many active members are there really? I looks like way less than 42,873.

Further to my stuff about membership: I just scrolled back up the leaderboard from the very bottom about 15 pages all are level 1 and have 500 pts. Of the ones I checked at least some were ranked some 6000 places above their leaderboard ranking according to their profiles. Example: dynamcbrthmrk leaderboard rank 42,201 , profile reads ranked 36,461 of 42,875 and all had taken no quizzes and some go back a year. Hmm strange.

yup, Chick, believe Armageddon has arrived. Know I don't want to tangle with you again-too tiring. However, believe there are just too many unhappy folks to shut them up with CHEESE. Of course, we could all become afraid to say much of anything which is my idea of what the Neverending whatevers are. I don't look at "shout" and that is why I haven't see you, I guess. You sure don't post much these days. By the way-whay has become of Jim(Allena)? Maybe I'll take your suggestion and swear a lot!! Linda

I guess I'll post the only minority opinion. I can't believe we miss the days of arguing and discussing private body parts in public. That's when I quit reading the posts anyway.

That said ... Blast away!

Allena said a while back that in July he was traveling to/in the UK, so that would explain why he's not posting or writing quizzes now.

Pretty sure we were talking about BEFORE that, Katy. When it really was a community. Like we were discussing the other day. And I'm pretty sure Smaug's parts aren't really that private. Not if those videos he put on youtube are any indication.

Smaug - I thought maybe your ears might be burning because we were chatting about you. I have no idea - wait, that's not true - as to why that part of your anatomy might burn.

Hey, weirdo - if you'll quit peeing on the stove and go to the bathroom, the strange burning miraculously goes away.

Drink a LOT of cranberry juice, Smaug. If's a urinary tract infection that will usually clear it up in a day or so.

I agree with Toledosugar about posting. I just love to read whatever smart-@$$ comments Easy and Smaug add, regardless of the topic. And I have definitely enjoyed this one, strangely enough.

You'd think the groups would be a great way to make some closer connections, but I'm finding that people join, comment a few times, and then disappear. Maybe it's the same thing that's going on island-wide.

Carry on.....

Smaug! You came out of hiding.

If I've told you once, I've told you a dozen times to quit peeing on the electric fence. Stop doing that and the burning will stop.

Maurlin....
I agree with all of your 5 cents worth....
and also the people who said they'd get rid of the white screen
and the so small print....
Changes on Sploofus are something like moving house (which I have also just done)
Nothing feels familiar and comfortable. Even our Avatars are homogenous and not our choice
Nothing is as easy because we're not sure what to do....I'm still busy trying all the new games.
Don't spend nearly as much time on Salty Dog and hope to get back to it soon.

I look back with nostalgia to Lodi's crying baby....and the days when Smoke and Randy
kept changing their most outrageous avatars, and we would all look eagerly for the latest pics
The one who was lowest on the Word Puzzles had to put up an ugly pic and some of them
were GROSS, especially Smoke's "naked fat lady"

I believe Justin is away with his family....possibly it was either that or divorce, he's been so busy
for so long getting Version 2 up and running!!!! Do not despair, once everything settles down-- the
glitches will be fixed and we'll all comfortable again - the camaraderie will re-emerge.
Because we love and respect each other

Lodi's a witch now! Great new avatar! I agree with the new feel, while I'm a relatively new poster, there's a different feel. It started before 2.0 though. It began in testing if you ask me. Maybe it's just an ebb and flow that occurs now and then.
And YES this white screen is the pits, please make it go away!!!
This is the first long discussion in a long time. Exchanges of ideas used to be what Salty Dog was all about, some serious, some silly and laugh out loud funny. Happy to see this one actually.
We'll all get accustomed to 2.0 and I'm hoping it will fall into place.
Pollyanna signing out....

For sure the family aspect is gone. Other factors have me questioning if I'll renew. The same people continue to fluke in some of the games with nothing ever done about it. The ever widening gaps in the point totals (just in the top 500). The snobbish cliques. It's truly nothing like it was when I joined. I think Justin is a genius, but can't get past the playereditor aspect. (California could have save millions if O.J. Could have also been the Judge in his case.) Not everyone can live on Sploofus all day so the point totals have less meaning every day. There are some truly cool people on this sight so I will always drop in, but it's no longer as entertaining as it once was. Oh yeah, they are still allowing NAS(ty)CAR quizzes in the sports category. Remember the polls? When we actually had a voice. It seems that has been replaced with a handful of editors making the decisions. (Rambling: New Medz). How about those Rays? Justin you are the BEST! God Bless our Troops!

A big part of the "community" feel for me was salty dog - and when Smaug was always causing controversy - and honestly I think some of the stifling of that has lessened what people used to do/say.

It's like the radio shock jocks - most of them piss you off, but they get you talking and debating.

It may just be the time that I joined - but during all of that - it seemed to just be much more interesting.

Just me

I have also noticed a trend to the more "warm and fuzzy" (& boring) type posts in this forum. No good confrontational stuff. We need more interesting topics. Religion, politics, sex, Smaug, bad habits, pet peeves, gas prices, embarrassing moments all come to mind as subjects to light a little fire. I think some members keyboards may have been damaged by slobber recently. Just my opinion

Couldn't agree more. If I need a "hug or lord forbid a kiss or two'" Will login to one of the abundant dating sites. I like friendship and respect here but please no more of the innane add-on threads. Might also add which I usually do say more than I should-do not appreciate outright meanness or base comments-give Smaug some leeway as he seems to be one of the few bright spots on this otherwise fast- becoming dull site. Some very loyal folks are trying very hard to keep it alive but changes don't know what need to be made VERY SOON! Linda

Okay, Don, here goes:
Religion: Education vs conversion. A friend of mine who happens to be a pastor is out to convert Muslims to Christianity. Any thoughts about that?

Politics: Bush is an idiot

Sex: If you insist

Smaug: Are you talking about having sex with him? Maybe that's why he is burning

Bad habits: The act of putting on makeup is called farding. I fard in my car and then have to put the windows down

Pet Peeves: people who fard in their car

Gas Prices: My Hummer gets four miles to the gallon: what me worry?

Embarrassing moments: Getting caught picking my nose

By the way: All is right with the world; the crying baby is back!!!!

Love to all

OK bbear,

1. Muslims will join your church just to get you to patronize their convenience store.

2. Bush IS an idiot but let's not replace him with a bigger idiot, like B.O.

3. Where would we be without sex?

4. Smaug obviously enjoys solos, no need for my help there.

5. One of my bad habits is drinking foreign beer. Sorry Budweiser!

6. One of my pet peeves is the movement to prevent the drilling for oil at the ANWR.

7. Gas prices,,,,I don't have a right to bitch, the way I drive.

8. Embarrassing moments,,,lots and lots but the most recent was this past Monday wandering around cruise night with my fly open. Oh well, no big thing!

The crying baby IS better!

Another observation as I thought about it today, was that what I felt when I joined was related to the closeness of some developed at Sploofus Philly - a lot of that carried over and I think many people were caught up in the overflow of how much fun people had and it continued here for quite a while.

I know that I (among many) really wish I had been there...and the carryover generated lots of interesting threads and "opening up" among people.

Just another possibility.

Philly - I always wished I could have gone to Philly. We were flying home from some European vacation the last Sunday of Philly, and I almost asked my husband to switch the tickets so we could land there instead - but then decided that would really be idiotic.

I've been pushy enough to meet a few Sploofers - and it is a great feeling.

Maybe that's what we need - another get-together! Anyone up for that??

I wish I had gone to Philly, too. I had just joined at that point and still felt that I wasn't "in" enough to go. Now I think I should have just gone and met everyone. Darn. I hope there will be a get-together that I CAN get to. I wish I could go on the death float, but it's not possible for me this summer -- maybe next time.

There was a bond by those of us who went to Chicago and to Philly, but the friendships had to have already been formed for so many to agree to travel so far to meet everyone. We all felt like old friends once we had arrived. That was 100% attributed to the community that had developed here.
