OKAY

I'll ask once again. What does and does not belong as a post on "Salty Dog"? The answer Ihave previously received of "anything and everything" is not getting it as the posts at least to many folks have become nothing but a huge BORE!! Know the same people such as myself posting almost nonstop is an equal BORE!! Lodi started a thread that brought the old times back but now see the same old sh--t. Sorry, but this is discoraging-Linda

I'm suspending you for starting a useless new thread called "okay" which should be under the old one "criticism".

That practice not only fractures conversations, it gluts thread headers and forces other topics off the front page, which is literally thread death.

A moderator would combine those threads and, conversely, break out new topic threads from long ones with tangents.

Linda - You know, I've never read any of those Never ending things. Well, that's not true - I opened the first one, saw what it was, closed it again, and never opened the others.

But the folks who play in that thread obviously like them. You don't. I don't. So, we don't have to read them. But why can't they post them?

Trends come and go when people are allowed to write what they like. Pretty soon, we'll get some new smart@ss in here who likes to stir up crap and we can all jump 'im. Then everybody will start having fun again and Felix can talk about cliques, and Smaug will drop a deuce. It'll be like old times. Except for the deuce thing, which, frankly, I'm not so thrilled about. Did you eat Indian food again?

"anything and everything" is the appropriate answer and directly from Justin's description of forum topics

The Salty Dog
General chat about anything and everything.

If your bored Linda, you might want to go find a political bbs with membership of both republic and democrats - I seriously doubt any of those threads would ever be boring, but you'd probably really find yourself pissed off all the time.

I just read Smoke's last post to Lodi's thread - I would not consider that boring.

There was not one thing boring about Lodi's thread or anthing that the folks posted there. Made up my mind If I cant say something positive will say nothing at all otherwise i'l be making those outragous posts about being atttacked which most folks could not see how including me-Linda

It's not illegal or immoral to be boring. One man's boring is another's fun. Let it go and let people have fun their own way. No one has the right to stop someone else's opinion of fun, and enough criticism has been launched. We who like it aren't going to stop doing it because you're bored with us. Get over it - start your own threads of your own kind of fun. Leave it alone.

And did I say - enough already!

That's what you said - so that's why I said what I said - so "she said / she said" - now I'm confused.

Okay - I'm just still confused - maybe I'm just too lousy at reading people's minds because what I got was "Lodi started a good thread and then everybody wrecked it (same old s) - policing people's response or telling them "your boring" I guess is what's getting me. Just seems to me that there is a misguided attempt to squash the sploofacracy because you don't like how some people do things, and that you are misinterpreting things people say to you (smaug?) and getting upset.

Now there is no doubt that smaug doesn't 'veil' his words - like in the other thread (that I can't remember and am not going to look up right now) and said you were banned - that was obviously tongue in cheek - but he says what he means as many people do here.

I think it's all fun and amusing mostly and if I don't - well then I don't click...and I hope that you can begin look at it the same way - there is nothing personal going on - just responses to what gets thrown out there.

I believe Kaelin won't be happy until I let her draw my blood. Obviously what I said was after Lodi's thread things went back as they were-so be it as it seems to be what people want- no bad comments about Lodi's thread-posted some personal things about myself there that am beginning to wish I had not. Over time there has been many phrases used to describe folks who want so badly to be a part of the group-from boot lickers to a-- kissers. Not saying she is any of these and the truly ironic part was it was her puzzle that no one had started a thread about so I did. You are an extremely intelligent and funny man, Smaug. Guess when your humor was directed at me let it get the best of me-carry on folks!! Linda sad you are sad, Smaug

Some people like to believe "If you can't say something nice, then don't say anything at all". Which is a real crock of &^%$. But it looks like more and more people are practicing it. THAT'S boring! I have a saying that I might be the author of,,"I would rather be your honest enemy than your dishonest friend". I try to follow that thought when posting. It might offend some but at least it's not boring. Or is it?

Please do not ever feel you have to start a thread on my WP if one's not there - I don't care - if the whole day went by and nothing was said - I wouldn't care.

The only freaking thing I said is that you shouldn't feel responsible if someone doesn't say something nice about someone's WP - and then your mad at Smaug & others for saying something they didn't say/mean?

I do have better things to do than try to understand what I perceive to be a warped sense of perception which is all I was trying to do - and I don't think I was being a bitch about it - but I guess I was wrong

Oh well - never mind - I have my own blood - thanks - and I'll stop trying to understand why your mad and NOW I'm going to buy some lemon cookies since I just finished off my last box from the girl scouts I've had hoarded away.

When CB radios were the big fad a number of years ago there were 23 channels. The goverment added 17 more channels to accomodate the new users. Only problem was that almost everyone wanted to talk on channel 19 with the truckers. The truckers didn't like the casual users clogging their channel and casual users didn't like the salty language used by the truckers. But no one wanted to move to other channels.

Kind of like Salty Dog. A lot of people don't like the conversations but no one wants to frequent the other boards.

Sargon, I remember the CB era well. The truckers were a lot more interesting to listen to. I used to monitor 19 on trips north while Kathy slept. Lots of chatter along 127 and I-75 and all of it very colorful. Maybe we need a few more truck drivers in Sploofus.

I used to listen to channel 19 because the truckers were good at reporting smokies. I couldn't listen when the kids were in the van because the subject matter was a little too colorful. Sometimes I had to switch it off because my wife got offended.

I enjoy Sploofus because it is rated G. If I want to swap jokes that sexist, racist or sexual there are plenty of places I can go on the web.

But this site is great because it fun place to get a wide range of trivia puzzles. I feel safe recommending it to my friends and family knowing they aren't going to be offended. I hope Sploofus remains family friendly.

Saragon, Your post makes sense out of someting that did not before. I am a guilty as the next. "Ask te Audience', Trivial Tangents, '"The Hit List" and the place for new people are seldom checked except by a few, It doesn't take long if you are new or want a question answered post haste-put in on "Salty Dog" as that is where the majority of folks go and stay. Have watched nothing new be added to the "Hit List' for as much as a month. Even Justin who controls this thing if he has something of importance to say puts it on the "Salty Dog" first so that more folks will notice ever since we have been told that the top forum was for official businesss only. Before that lots of stuff was posted there. Can understand his reasoning behind that rule but now few folks even look at it unless it is called to thir attention on "Salty Dog. That is why it seems we have everything from soup to nuts here-no one wants to go to the areas which are specified for their purpose as most people seldom if ever check them-thanks for clarifying why the other forums have become unused and all but unnecessary under the curerent practice-Linda

I'm guilty of spending 99% of my forum reading time on the Salty Dog. Maybe once a week I'll check the other boards.

My other guilty pleasure is posting to "Add a number". It strikes me as kind of a scavenger hunt for numbers. I've learned a lot trivia searching for numbers and reading posts by other sploofusers. The "never ending activity" never really caught my fancy but it appears that a lot of people read and post to it. It will be interesting to see if people are posting to the activites a couple of months from now.

I'm just happy the boards are there when I can't sleep at 3 in the morning.

Perhaps a board of Island Games would be nice for all of those to go into - obviously a lot of people DO enjoy them - if I remember correctly Pepper started one while the non-beta testers were feeling so left out for the exact purpose of bringing people together...so there was good intent.

No, Kaelin, do not believe Saragon is a mind reader nor does he think himself to be. He just seems to take the time to READ whaat other folks have to say before he opens his mouth just to hear himself talk or see his namee in print. He's been here since the first tme I joined and that was long ago. He too is a very smart man with valid opinions who offers them respectfully.

Smaug, from your sarcasm about the egg cracking thing and what you said to me last night in your "kind" way, guess you do not believe there should be more than one forum-smething about division bringing death to a site. The egg thing woulcd "fit" under "Ask he Audience" and would not require a forum of its own. If you don't like or believe in more than one forum this might be something you could suggest to Justin. He has said before that you have good ideas. I'm sure he thought these other forums through and simply didn't pull them out of thin air. We just don't use them. When he said "anything and everyhing" can be put in "Salty Dog" I think (my attempt at mind reading here) I think he was talking about things that did not fit anywhere else. Linda

In the "Second Beginning" there was only one forum and no shout box. It was sorta spicy at times and made for good reading most days. As I recall, it simply became large and unwieldy, so in an organizational mood, apparently, Justin divided it up into subject matters with the thought, I'm sure, that people would be able to find that which interested them more easily. Perhaps, from a programming and loading standpoint, it also made things faster with the site the way it was at that time?

Thank you Linenlady for the clarification. The days of Justin's consideration of sellin or letting someone else take over the site were before even m first time here. Knew there must be a reason for the now mainly unused forums. One cannot force anyone to post where they don't want to do that-was done in the first official forum though. Others disagree but believe the posting on "Salty Dog" has become unweildy once again. Hard feelings are starting to emerge and all. Justin cannot please everyone-much too diverse of a group- but would really like to her HIS thoughts on this whole thing-thanks-Linda

Linda

I'm not going to continue to argue with you or attempt to appease you, as it was never my intention to make you angry - just try to understand what it was that you were asking/saying.

If the post you made AFTER Sargon wrote about the CB & Channel 19 had been the FIRST post you made (clarification of what each forum is and why they aren't used & why everything goes into the Salty Dog) there would have been no misunderstandings on anyone's part. I come here because I enjoy what people have to say - not to disect and interpret what a person is "trying" to say. And obviously I'm not the only one who did not understand the point of your question - Sargon apparently did after all the back and forth going on - good for him.

You started this with:
"Okay

I'll ask once again. What does and does not belong as a post on "Salty Dog"? The answer Ihave previously received of "anything and everything" is not getting it as the posts at least to many folks have become nothing but a huge BORE!!"

Had you started your thread with a post of

"Justin has multiple boards for the forums - why is it that the other forums designed for specific topics rarely get used and people just automatically post everything to The Salty Dog? It's really a bore for people to have to scroll through all this topics that have categories specifically designed for them" - that is a legitimate question/statement that would have been easily understood. I did NOT understand what you were saying - I was TRYING to comprehend your intent and could not, which is why I asked what I did and made suggestions that I inaccurately thought might help and appease your unhappiness with the majority of the people that do bother to post on this board. Then you get mad at me with the whole "draw blood" thing - it's a character flaw that I have in that I try to get the logic from something someone says when I don't understand - as people communicate in different ways.

I rewrite people's copy on a daily basis because it's my job. My job is to take the meaning and point that they are trying to convey and put it in a written format that is friendly to both the reader and to the Search Engines (websites) - so I do beg your forgiveness in crossing the line with you. I sincerely regret now not waiting until Sargan happened upon the thread and took the time to better explain things to where even I could understand it and that not put either of us through all this negative garbage.

And to the point, I was not being sarcastic with Sargon about the mind reading, and you really should let him question me or stand up for himself if he takes issue with what I said to HIM, not YOU, since you once again misinterpreted my post and seem to be defending him against something that really needs no defense - or not. Since he is obviously good at reading between the lines, why don't you let him read his lines and interpret them himself.

I hope you have a happy day Linda.

Regarding the comment " Hard feelings are starting to emerge and all", it appears to me that only one person is working up hard feelings. Linda's last statement was a good wake up call I'm spending too much time here anyway and I realize I'm using it as a release thinking I can assist others since I'm not doing much good in real life - (buzzer sounds) WRONG! I'm really sorry I made it worse.

Don't call anyone - I'm actually putting the mute button on any further posts for now...and actually had made a promise to someone else in response to something they pointed out and said I wouldn't even look at this thread anymore so I apologize to them (they know who they are) for looking - it's like a car wreck I guess - I couldn't help it.

Older eggs are easier to peel than new ones. As eggs age, some of the carbon dioxide contained in the albumen escapes, reducing its acidity. Research shows that the reduced acidity helps with peeling1. The trade-off, however, is that in older eggs the yolk tends to move further from being centered. This happens because the white gets thinner and is less able to hold the yolk in place. The best compromise is to use eggs that have been stored on their sides in the refrigerator for 7 to 10 days. Contrary to what you would expect, keeping them on their side results in a more centered yolk than if they are stored on end.

Boil eggs at just below the simmer for about 12 minutes (see "Boiling Eggs without Cracking the Shells"), then plunge them immediately into cold water. Once they are cooled, peel the eggs. I find it works better if they are peeled immediately, rather than being stored in the shell.

To peel them, you first need to crack the shell all over. An easy way to do this is to put the eggs back into the empty saucepan and rattle them around until the shells are cracked. Alternately, you can cup the egg gently in you hand and crack the shell by tapping it gently against the inside wall of your "impeccably clean" sink. As you rap the eggs against the sink, let it roll in you hand so that various spots get hit. In either case, don't strike the egg too hard. You want to crack the shell while trying not to damage the white underneath. Rolling the egg around between your hands helps to get the shell cracked all over.

Then peel the shell away. There is a thin skin under the shell that you want to have come off, too. Once you start to peel away the skin, it will take the cracked shell with it. Again, I find it easier to work under gently flowing water, as it washes away loose pieces of shell and helps to lift the skin as the water runs in under it.

Peeled eggs can be stored for a few days in the refrigerator. Unpeeled hard-boiled eggs will keep for about a week.

Boil them in salt water, run cold water in the pan for quite some time with the eggs in it and the shells usually come of rather easily-old eggs make it harder-comes from years of preparing huge quantities of potato sald-I use eggs in mine-Linda

I recently read that brown eggs have thicker shells and are better for deviled eggs, hard boiled eggs, etc

By the way, folks. I sent Kaelin a pm apologizing for being so BI--y and asked her not to quit because of unkind remarks by me. She replied that she is not going to quit but simply take a break-know good folks are leaving here and would not want to think I was responsible for that. Differences still exist though and hope a solution can be reached-Linda

I've grown to love you all dearly, am an avid reader of the very cleverly- and well-written Salty Dog (is there a book here somewhere?). But I'm stuck trying to figure out why Kaelin hoards Girl Scouts and where she hides them ("I just finished off my last box from the girl scouts I've had hoarded away").

Hoarding cookies is one thing, hoarding Girl Scouts seems beyond the pale.

Diet coke out the nose.

My boiled eggs are generally for deviled eggs. I need centered yolks and painless peels that won't destroy the whites. I find that if I boil the bejesus out of them, it ends up making them easier to peel in the long run.

Geesuz-now Smoke and I disagree about old eggs vs new ones-like who cares? At least my mean mode seems to have disappeared but you had better not mess with me, Smaug. We old folks can go bokers over anything and in a heartbeat!!

Why do eggs have that tapered pointy end?

It keeps the mother chicken from slamming shut.

I heard the same thing about human excrement and a human body part.

Obviously your jokes are classier than mine.

Eggs are pointy on one end so they won't roll in a straight line. Pointiest eggs are from cliff-dwelling birds.

Peeling eggs. My father-in-law is a gadget guy. He has a contraption that you use by holding the egg under the faucet. It fits on the faucet and pokes into the boiled egg. You turn on the cold water, and voila! The shell pops off, pretty as a magazine. He got it in some gadget brochure.

In the Voyage to Lilliput, the people are small, with small and petty concerns. Swift puts them as members of two political parties, the "High Heels" and "Low Heels". The people of Lilliput fight the people of Blefuscu for the smallest of things, the right way to crack an egg, the Big End or the Small End! The Big Endians go to war against the Small Endians because of that disagreement.

So, yes, Smaug, I have read Jonathan Swift.

See, I'm sthmart

Hey - I think I just figured out why nobody's using the other forums much anymore.

We used to get a screen showing us the most recent threads and posters for each board. We don't get that now - just the top 10 or so last posts from all boards, with no telling what board a thread is on until you get there (and not easy to tell even then), and no idea what's in a forum or who's posting there until you go in. Salty Dog gets all the hits because it was always the most popular, and without the other threads looking you in the face, how often do you seek them out?

Oh, wait...you can tell who posted last - it's listed underneath the links in teensy pale gray letters.

It was lost in the glare from all the white.
