For some reason, whenever I start on a WordPuzzle in which the first puzzle I get is insanely difficult (as in the Antarctica puzzle tonight), after I've squandered far too many moves on that first one, I seem to invariably make idiotic mistakes (inverting letters, typos, etc.) on several of the remaining puzzles, making my score even lower than it already is. On the other hand, when my first puzzle is either easy or at least reasonably gettable, I'm quite careful and seldom make stupid mistakes. Unfortunately, it seems as though I get saddled with the most difficult puzzle first thing with alarming frequency. Of the hard puzzle had been the fifth one, I'd probably not have made the stupid mistakes I made on the easier one. Does anyone else notice that the hardest puzzle in the bunch is almost always puzzle number one? Or am I the only one this happens to?

Lane, you sound like me with my TQOTD problems. My word puzzle situation is opposite yours. My tricky or hard puzzles come last.

the past couple the first and last were breezy and the middle killed me - then the first & last were hard and the middle easy - very few times do I get all easy - I don't think it matter where it comes when I tank -- it's always a bit more depressing though when it's the last one - and I'm sporting a 10-15 - and then when I'm done it's a 30 or 40

I think Lane is saying - his depression over the first part
affects his performance on the whole rest of the Puzzle.
So if I were the emotion referee...I'd say Lane is the
most depressed...Lorri is the most disappointed,
and Liam is ....well....Liam

I think it's more the human desire for a pattern that's emerging, and that the first one seems harder more often because you're the most clueless on that one.

Right now I'm hoarding my one vocabulry QOTD with the hope of moving up a level before perhaps wagering...I have until the 3rd - maybe the sploofus vocabulary gods will release another one to me so I don't feel so paranoid.

Anyone else get one yet?

Agree. And if I face plant the first one I usually quit.

But, hey, I always look to see if I beat you. You are very good...

I do the WPs and think I suck at each one, yet somehow I rank in the top 100 this month. I'll keep sucking if it works this well.

Just burned a vocabulary this morning...but they are few and far between. Dang Trivia Porpourri has been clogging my QODs and I'm not brave enough to wager on that!

I've got two Kaelin. Too bad we can't trade, I do well with Sports (including snooker) and World Events (when they don't want Science and Geography).

If it's a WP that I can't figure out the theme ahead of time, I usually get the worst of the bunch first. If I lose points on the first one, I tend to get sloppy too What's worse is when you don't understand what you're looking for on the first & it was the one you'd have done with few or no letters if you'd got it second Today I decided to wager on one of the 3 vocabs (yes, I am hoarding) & I forgot to tick the wager box. Good luck for me, it was a doozy & I got it wrong. Wagered the next successfully. Now out of tokens so must hope I get another before vocab 3 gets eaten up. I just know I'm in for a vocab drought as soon as I get my BD tokens

That's why a good test always starts out with the easier questions. I was always conscious of that when making up a test. Start em out nice and simple, so the sweeties think they can do this, no problem. Then put in your normal important questions. THEN hit them with a few that remind them that they wish that they had bothered to study!

I never notice those things because I go strictly for speed, so I no longer count moves or remaining points at the end.

Bbird; remind my never to have you as a teacher. Do you smack knuckles with the ruler and have a dunce cap on the stool in the corner too?

Kaelin I've gotten Vocabulary QOTD questions for the last 5 days straight! I think they have given yours to me! I'll trade you if I get another one...

I haven't gotten a vocab TQOTD in at least three weeks, maybe longer.

I have find difficult puzzles in the WP's all over the place. Of course I'm never even in the the top 30 so I'm not a very good barometer.

Well, there was a change in the pattern this morning--it was the second one that cost me double digits in moves, after which I got frustrated and began making boneheaded mistakes. I must have guessed wrongly five or six times. I used to be good at these WordPuzzles, but lately my performance has been pathetic. I'm clearly taking them too seriously. Argh!
