Inspiring Lyrics--"Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me"

puppyfootPuppyfoot on 09/05/2008

trivia quiz "Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me" has lyrics written by a young Christian minister, Augustus Toplady. He was traveling through particularly rough terrain in England when a heavy rainstorm drove him to seek shelter quickly. He found a rocky overhang that protected him from rain and wind. There, as he waited out the storm, he conceived the idea for the lyrics to the hymn. The words were written in 1763. The tune in the version with which I am most familiar was written by Thomas Hastings. This Kerblunk is based on three of the verses from that hymn.

AN IMPORTANT NOTE: I realize that many hymns have different versions of lyrics because they have been revised over the years. If you feel that any of the "wrong" answers on this quiz are actually right and can send me information verifying this, I will gladly consider changing the answers. Thanks for your help.

another good quiz--thanks for your time and effort.
When I first saw the tune name of Toplady, I thought someone was cleverly making a joke
for Eve or for Mary--get it? Top Lady? Then as I grew older, I realized it was the man's last name!
He was quite opposed to much of John Wesley's theology --Calvinist versus Methodist -- but
surprisingly enough, Wesley had written some time earlier: "O God of Salvation, Rock struck and
cleft for me, let those two Stream of Glood and Water which gushed from the side, bring down Pardon
and Holiness into my soul..." I guess you know all that ---just thought it interesting that these two
supposedly opposing greats wrote similar thoughts!
If Toplay had lived past his 38 years I wonder how many more golden gems we would have in our
hymn libraries.
