100 Best Horror Films of All Time --The Top Ten!
![]() |
Made it! Here at last are the top 10. I hope you've enjoyed the previous 90! Finally I get to put this research to use! Several years ago I embarked on a mission to survey as many writers as I could contact who had published in the horror genre. Whether by email or hard-copy mail I got in touch with them and asked them to vote for their choices of the 3 Best Horror Films of All Time. It sparked some fascinating discussions (What does Best mean? What constitutes horror? etc.) and I even heard back from giants in the field of horror fiction such as Peter Straub, Joyce Carol Oates, John Saul and many others (Never did hear back from Stephen King though). In total I received responses from 1,324 writers! Yes, that's correct, 1,324 writers who published either fiction or non-fiction in the horro genre. My idea I suppose, was to gather the opinions of a sort of "expert witness" in the field, not necessarily fans of horror, but those with a more close-up association with what it takes to create horror. It was a very labor intensive endeavor, and although I intended to continue the research in different categories such as maybe the 100 Best Quarterbacks of All Time (by polling football coaches and sportwriters) or the 10 Best U.S. Presidents (by polling history professors) I never did get around to further surveys. So what I'll do from now 'til Halloween is reveal the top 100 Best Horror Movies, 10 at a time (or more) in successive quizzes until we reach the top 10 hopefully around October 31st. But anyway, on the downside, this research was compiled and completed a couple of years ago, so unfortunately many recent horror films will not appear on the list as they probably would have if I had completed the survey today. I'm thinking of "The Ring" for instance, and maybe "Saw" and who knows how many others. The survey was completed around the time that "The Blair Witch Project" and "The Sixth Sense" were popular, so those were the most "current" films at the time to make the list and would have finished even higher I suspect had I started the survey later still. So here they are, The Top 10 films out of the 100 Best Horror Films. I hope you enjoy the results, and I'll try and include comments from the writers along the way. Good Luck, and please rate the quiz afterwards if you don't mind. Best wishes, Bill

Your # 3 is totally wrong! The title role hardly refers to Valerie Hobson who had a tiny part in the movie. The entire thrust of the movie was creating the Lanchester character. Do you really think the Bride referred to the doctor and not the monster? Quibble on, Jeeves, but 50,000,000 movie lovers can't be wrong!
