20thCenturyAmericanLiterature19411950 Photo The fifth decade of the 20th century is not especially noteworthy for literary achievements by American writers. Undoubtedly, this is due to World War II interrupting normal life in the United States. In the "20th Century American Literature" series I have attempted to present mostly writers and books which are generally considered to be "major" by critics and scholars of literature. This proved to be a difficult task for the period January 1, 1941 through December 31, 1950. Many of the relatively few masterworks published in the relevant period are so well known that it stretched my ability to formulate a quiz question with an answer that wouldn't be obvious to the literate Sploofusers who have taken this series of quizzes. (This was particularly true with respect to the playwrights who published great works in this decade.) Moreover, although a number of good novelists published in the relevant period, few are universally acknowledged as great, adding to the problem of selecting enduring authors and books as quiz answers. I think I have ultimately created a quiz that is worthy of inclusion in this series.

Many of the writers covered in this quiz wrote in more than one literary form; however, seven of the questions concern writers best known as novelists or novels, themselves; two are about playwrights/plays, and one is concerned with the shorty story form. The image for this quiz is a 1941 photograph of Carson McCullers, one of the American writers working between January 1, 1941 and December 31, 1950.
