In a December,2004 Special Collector's Issue, Rolling Stone Magazine published its list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time". Chosen by a jury of 172 singers, musicians, industry figures, critics, producers and songwriters these songs influenced a generation and helped to shape the world as we know it today. The list is sure to provoke debate over which songs should or should not have been included and how they should have been ranked; it is the nature of such lists. But, as Rolling Stone stated in 2004 "The RS 500 salutes the songs that move us - and the artists who create them. It is also proof that whenever you want to know what is going on, listen to the music".
