A Glossary of Gullah Words

bigmama60Bigmama60 on 07/21/2007

AGlossaryofGullahWords Photo I like discovering the etymologies of words. Gullah is a unique culture of a thriving mix of language, folktales and superstition, a mix of language that is practically identical to those used in West Africa.Gullah language is an only one of its kind language. It is unique Creole language with borrowed words and grammar from African languages as well as from English. People thought Gullah was poor English My grandmother would say "Don't sweet mout' me", I remember or "kibbuh'um" (cover up). African-American scholar Lorenzo Dow Turner studied Gullah on the Sea Islands spoken on the coastal islands and adjacent mainland of South Carolina and Georgia. He was able to establish that this language is made up of English and over 4,000 words from many different African languages.Eminent Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas is a Gullah, from the Gullah/Geechee cultural region of coastal Georgia and spoke the Gullah dialect until the age of 16. The Gullah, or Geechee as they are known in Georgia, is an astonishing group of African-Americans. The Gullah/Geechee has been able to retain more of their African heritage than any other African-Americans. National Geographic magazine, pages 735-763

I, too, love seeking etymologies. This quiz had me trying to imagine how the English words got whittled down by the mouths of thousands of speakers to end up in these forms. Love it!
