|Historical background-During this time, peasants and artisans had about the same standard of living as in the Middle Ages. Many lacked basic housing and sufficient food and clothing. Agriculture was basically the same as practiced in the Middle Ages. Farming practices were still based upon family and community traditions. Common fields were open, and common agricultural lands were not fenced or hedged. Famines were a staple of life prior to the Agricultural Revolution. The majority of the European population engaged in farming, with the exception of the Dutch who were more urban. Changes in farming and animal husbandry which resulted from scientific research changed life forever. |
