Ever wonder what the cryptic looking numbers on a planes fuselage are all about? Well, every civilian aircraft worldwide has a registration number (sometimes called the "tail number"). The tail number is made up of a prefix selected from the country's specific callsign and the registration suffix. Depending on the country of registration, this suffix is a numeric or alphanumeric code and consists of one to five digits or characters respectively. Knowing the registration numbers is a handy way of telling where the plane is registered, and more importantly, which country's maintenance regulations it has to adhere to.
