Art Heists: A Pastiche of Purloined Paintings

I stumbled upon the topic of art heists while doing some research on the internet on an entirely different subject, and ended up researching art theft instead. These tales of art theft are presented roughly chronologically, from oldest to most recent. Many of these true crime tales of art heists involve unusual motivations and/or interesting characters. I am not known for my short quiz questions, and overall, the questions in this quiz are longer than usual so that I can convey the interesting aspects of the theft stories and provide some clues to aid in identification of the correct answers. This is one of my most "international" quizzes, as the quiz covers more English and European art heists than those occurring in the United States.
For the most part, you are asked to identify a stolen painting or the artist who created a stolen painting. I doubt that this will prove a particularly popular quiz -- notwithstanding the many interesting stories of art theft -- but if the number of takers exceeds my expectations, there are more than enough other art heists for a second quiz on the topic.
Take a good look at the painting reproduced in the Introduction to this quiz; you may find that it will be of assistance in answering the fifth question.
