Athletes and Coaches who Died in Plane Crashes

The recent October 12, 2006 tragedy involving New York Yankee pitcher Cory Lidle crashing his plane into an apartment building on Manhattan's Upper East Side (72nd Street and York Avenue) was a baffling matter, but ultimately a sad one as we all reflected on the causes of the malfunctioning and the spectacle which brought to mind terrorism, and the waste of a young athlete's life. For many around the country, it perhaps brought back to mind other athletes over the span of the previous century who died tragically in airplane accidents, ending prematurely their careers in the games they loved so much. Herewith a look back on several of those awful events.
