I don't own a copy of Johnny Cash's "American Recordings", which includes a version of "Bird On A Wire". Thus, I can't use the Cash version as a correct answer and stay true to the one rule of "The Song Remains the Same" quiz series, namely, that I must own a version of any recording that figures as a correct answer. There is no rule, however, that prohibits using Johnny Cash's "American Recordings" to introduce our eternal quiz song. According to the his/her domestic partner at the time, s/he had helped the composer out of a depression by handing him/her his/her guitar, whereupon this artist immediately began to compose "Bird On the Wire". The song begins: "Like a bird on the wire, Like a drunk in the midnight choir; I have tried in my way to be free." In the first question, you are asked to identify the composer of "Bird On the Wire". In the 10 remaining questions, you are asked to identify the artist who recorded the described version of our song that remains the same. Each question provides information that may well help you in answering that question. I truly believe the difficulty ratings for the quizzes in this series would be substantially lower if quiz takers simply took time to carefully read the questions and reflected for a moment before answering. The versions of "Bird On the Wire" used in this quiz are principally in hyphenated rock genres, e.g., folk-rock, blues-rock, etc. Sources: Listening to various versions of "Bird On the Wire" that I have in my collection, informational material accompanying the albums on which these versions appear, and Wikipedia, the on-line encyclopedia.
