Can you add and subtract Roman numerals?
![]() |
Like most of my puzzles, this one has a twist; certain words are composed only of the letters that make up Roman numerals, using the basic ingredients I, V, X, L, C, D, M for 1, 5, 10, 50, 100 500 and 1000. We'll throw in 0 for zero to give us another vowel, and we can make quite a few words. Just add up all the ingredients, so CIVIL is 157, then do the sum I suggest. For example COX - OX could equal COO (or CO). All you have to do is the math; add or subtract as indicated, and find the answer that could equals the relevant number.
