Castles in the Air
![]() |
People have long been fascinated with castles. Perhaps it's partly due to the romantic images that have been tied to them. The reality of life in a castle was often far different than those romantic images conjured up by most. While it's true that they were fortresses of protection, they also served as a home to a vast many, reaching far beyond the "family" unit. There was a diverse population that called the castle their home. This included knights, cooks, engineers, entertainers, commoners, and numerous others from all occupations and social classes. It was imperative that these castles allow for total self-sufficiency within. They had to be prepared to hold out for long periods of time should they come under attack. While I can't claim a prior fascination for castle living, after reading about them while writing this quiz I can admit that I would really love to visit quite a few of those I've read about. That's where this quiz's title comes into play. My chances of visiting these castles are merely my own "castles in the air", which freedictionary.com defines as "a desire or hope that is very unlikely to be fulfilled"! But, I like dreamin' - wait that's a different song and a different category all together! Anyway, I'll give you the castle's name and some background - you tell me what country I need to visit. I hope you enjoy this quiz. Good Luck!

Great quiz...should have gotten the EA.
It might interest you to know that I know Caerffili Castle rather well - my ancestors held it in the 1200s, and I still have cousins in the town!
