amNY recently (Feb. 25, 2008 issue) gave a rundown on the distinctions of how a New York accent is broken down: things like Rs that disappear after vowels, the “oi” sound becoming “er”, the “a” sound becoming “aw” and several other aspects. It’s changing to be sure though as the town continues its status as hub of the planet, with immigrants from new places around the world coming onto the scene. Few people for instance really say “terlet” for “toilet” anymore like Archie Bunker on TV’s “All in the Family” did, but many of the clichés still exist such as the morning cup of “cawfee.” The article listed several prominent New Yorkers over the years who were or are noted for their New York accents. I’ve added on a few to the list myself. So I hope youse all enjoy da quiz. If youse don’t… fuggedaboutit. And please wontcha rate da quiz after youse done? Tanks, Bill
