The American Religious Identity Survey of some 50,000 Americans conducted in 2001 by sociologists at the Graduate School of the City University of New York concluded that Buddhism was the fourth largest religion in the United States (excluding non-religious and variations thereof), with an estimated number of just over 1,500,000 adherents. I had no trouble locating lots of purported celebrity Buddhists for this quiz; however, it was more difficult to determine the actual level of celebrity commitment to Buddhism. In any event, I have not included such figures as Keanu Reeves, Uma Thurman, and Angelina Jolie who, although often reported as being Buddhists, have stated that they are not really believers. Nor have I included celebrities (for instance, Patti Smith) who claim to be Buddhists, but have a history of flirting with various religious traditions, or whose Buddhism appears to be just a part of a syncretic belief system.

With the exception of one Buddhist American politician - whose photograph introduces this quiz - these celebrities are known for their work in film, music, or athletics. Most of the celebrities are Americans; however, some non-American native English speaking Buddhists are also correct answers.
