The Sun's energy originates in it's interior where the temp. exceeds 27 million degrees. Here the tremendous heat transforms hydrogen, the lightest element in the known universe into helium. The sun's surface has a temp. of approximately 11,000 F.
The sun appears to have been active 4.6 billion years and has enough fuel to continue on another 5 billion years or so. At the end of its life it will start to fuse helium into heavier elements and begin to swell up, ultimately growing so large it will swallow the earth.
