|The American Civil War grew out of sectional disputes over the continued existence of slavery in the South, and out of the contention of Southern legislators that the states retained many rights (including the right to secede).|
The war was not fought by state against state. It was a conflict between one federal regime (the United States of America) and another (the Confederate States of America).
