Dead In LA: Forest Lawn Memorial Park (Glendale)

Forest Lawn is a chain of cemeteries (called "Memorial Parks" by the company) established in southern California in 1906. The original location in Glendale, Los Angeles County, is the subject of the first of what I anticipate to be several quizzes about the final resting places of the famous dead of L.A. Dr. Hubert Eaton, who took over management of Forest Lawn in 1917, is credited with establishing the "Memorial Park Plan", which eliminated upright cemetery memorials. Dr. Eaton considered most cemeteries to be "unsightly depressing stoneyards". He envisioned Forest Lawn as a park setting filled with trees, sweeping lawns, fountains (the image introducing this quiz is Heron Fountain on the grounds), dignified memorial architecture, and statuary (often replications of classic sculptures, such as Michelangelo's David.) In addition to funerals the three non-sectarian chapels on the cemetery grounds have been the venue for over 60,000 weddings. Forest Lawn-Glendale receives over a million visitors a year, including thousands of local schoolchildren. Many famous people have made their last residence at Forest Lawn-Glendale. The quiz covers some of those who are interred at the cemetery and who achieve fame in life in the motion picture or television industries - mostly, but not exclusively, as actors and actresses. There are many other denizens of Forest Lawn-Glendale who were famous in life for reasons other than films or television, and these departed may be addressed in a future quiz.
