Descartes Before De Horse

Rene Descartes walks into a bar, and the bartender asks "Would you like a beer?"
Descartes replies "I think not" and POOF! he vanishes...
But then a horse walked into the bar. The bartender said, "Why the long face?"
Okay, now to serious matters. This quiz is comprised of 10 questions, or 5 pairs of questions. The first question of each pair will be related to philosopher Rene Descartes. The second question in each related pair will be about horses. So then, each pair of questions will have something in common, one of them more Descartes-oriented though, and the other more horse-oriented.
And of course, the Descartes question will come before 'de' horse question in each pair.
