According to the 2001 American Religious Identification Survey conducted by the Graduate School of City University of New York, there are some 1,100,000 Hindus in the United States. Most, but not all of the Hindus who are correct answers in this quiz are Americans. For purposes of this quiz, I have not included Westerners of Indian background, such as Sanjay Gupta, CNN's resident physician, but have elected to use people whose status as a Hindu would be unexpected if not known from press reports. As with my conceptually similar quiz "Celebrity Buddhists Whose Mother Tongue Is English", I have attempted to distinguish between true believers and dabblers, including the former as correct answers, but excluding the latter. Most of the notables who are correct answers are writers or musicians. To many, Hinduism conjures up images of cow worship, but in reality a relatively small number of Hindus fall into that category. "Hinduism", like "Christianity", is a large grouping that contains many different methods of practice and belief. The image introducing this quiz is of the January, 2007 cover of "Hinduism Today", an American publication established in 1979 and currently circulating in over 60 countries.
