This is a quiz about the famous castrato Carlo Broschi Farinelli. Trained castrati were virtuoso singers, enjoying international celebrity status and accumulating vast wealth, much like the top pop stars of today.
Farinelli was born to a minor noble family in Naples in 1705. His much older brother, Riccardo, was very ambitious for the talented singer, and was the one who pushed for him to be castrated at the age of seven.
The most renowned of the castratos, Farinelli was the most famous singer of his century. He had an exceptional voice, although his androgynous beauty clearly contributed to his success. He enjoyed a quasi-mythical status, even in his own lifetime, perhaps because he retired at the height of his fame and powers.
