The Firesign Theatre--Phil Austin, Peter Bergman, David Ossman, and Philip Proctor--created a kind of comedy that is almost unique in American humor, beginning on radio and then in a series of comedy albums that owed much to the BBC's "The Goon Show," but going places the Goons wouldn't have dared.
