Gustave Flaubert: Life and Works
![]() |
Flaubert is one of my favorite writers, almost overburdened with talent and yet, as is so often the case with those so burdened, frustratingly unproductive. This has much to do with his legendary perfectionism - he devoted to each line, its metre and resonance, the same attention as might a poet, something which becomes evident when one reads in the original French - but also due to a troubled career and unsatisfactory personal life. Not too difficult a quiz for one with more than a passing interest in the writer, but if no such interest existed, why would you even be reading this?
