Here come the drums, here come the drums!

A few years ago I taught music in primary schools. I organised for a group of Taiko drummers to visit my school. The performance by this group was one of the most interesting I have seen. It was very interactive with the children invited to join in playing ostinato rhythms and occasionally the odd improvisation. This mini concert was a defining moment in my teaching career and sent me on a personal journey of discovery. I was inspired to find out about drums and determined to use them in my teaching. My students loved them and whilst there was a drum at their fingertips they were extremely focused. In this period of time I learned how to make drums of my own and used them constantly. Not only did the children learn about music, about performance, but in our drum circle they also learned about participation, social skills, sharing and improvisation. I'm a great believer in the power of the drum and in this quiz I'll introduce you to ethnic drums around the world, and throw in a few musical terms as well. The image you see here is of drums I made for use in my classes. If anyone would like my notes on drum making I'm happy to share. Have fun and enjoy this quiz. Reference: Wikepedia
