John Brown, the abolitionist, led a raid on the Harper's Ferry Federal Arsenal in 1859. His intent was to supply the stolen arms to the slaves in the State of Virginia as a means to their freedom. Brown envisioned the raid as the beginning of the end of the criminal practice of slavery. He was captured in the effort and hanged after a trial. Considered a hero by many because of his zealous devotion to the abolition of slavery, others considered him a terrorist for advocating and fomenting violence. Abraham Lincoln called him a "misguided fanatic". Hero or terrorist? You decide.
