Where Superman is square-jawed and resolute, he's conflicted.
Where the Flash has time for a job, a marriage, a social life and a side-career fighting crime, he constantly has to make choices...and what he wants very seldom wins.
Where Green Lantern whizzes around in fighter jets on dates beautiful women in his spare time, he gets humiliated by bullies and ridiculed by the girls in his class.
Where the Batman has a new Batmobile standing by in case the one he's using gets blown up, he wonders from month to month how he's going to pay the rent.
And sometimes? He goes into battle with criminals, super or otherwise...and LOSES.
A sad sack? No doubt. A born loser? Welllll...NO.
Because this is someone who WILL NOT QUIT, who does what he knows is right no matter what he stands to lose, and who greets adversity with integrity, good-natured japery, and a killer right hook. Peter Parker muddling through his life is every single one of us, with our frailties and insecurities, but he's also the hero we are all looking for in ourselves. "Watchmen" is about to become a major motion picture, and when it does, millions will discover the "revisionist" super-hero source material for the first time, but 20 years before "Watchmen", Peter Parker was the REAL "revisionist superhero."
But it wasn't just the strong writing and characterization that some of the comic book industry's greatest writers have brought to Spider-Man over the past 40-plus years that make him an enduring legend. It was also the contributions of some of the most talented artists ever to put pencil to paper. To wit...
