I Swear! Silly Euphemisms
![]() |
True Story: When I was young I saw "The Secret War of Harry Frigg" and just about the only thing I remember from it is Paul Newman's line "Cheese and Crackers! Somebody is out of their bed!" or something to that effect. For some reason, I thought this was simply hilarious. Flash forward twenty years and I'm writing a script and think it would be funny to have the main character say "Cheese and Crackers!" My story editor informs me that I can't put that in because cheese and crackers is a euphemism for Jesus Christ. I proceeded to recommend some colorful alternatives... While searching for a useable replacement, I discovered that virtually all the silly expressions I knew where euphemisms for more objectionable phrases. Here are some of the sillier euphemisms out there for minor swear words. Don't worry, I'll steer clear of 'The Seven Words You Can't Say On Television'. I don't want to offend anyone, it's just a look at the odd notion that twisting the sounds around somehow makes a phrase more acceptable.
