|Background: Despite economic and social reforms, Russia’s problems prior to the beginning of the 20th century were still enormous. The production of food could not keep pace with the growth of population. By the end of the 19th century, Russia had become Europe’s most populous nation. The Depression of 1899 had wiped out any gains since 1890 resulting in tremendous unemployment. Sixty percent of the population was illiterate, although literacy was growing in St. Petersburg and Moscow. To add to the misery, Russia would find itself in a war in 1904-05.|
The questions in this quiz reflect the social, economic, and political changes within the Russian Empire prior to World War One. As always, good luck!
