Inaugural Addresses and Farewell Speeches

|Except for George Washington's two inaugurations, the inauguration of a new president has usually signaled the departure of another president. While the inaugural address is an American political tradition, an official farewell address has not always been given. George Washington did not give his farewell speech orally – it was printed in a newspaper. Of course, those presidents who died in office did not have a chance for a farewell address. For those who survived, there is no set date designated for one’s final speech. Therefore, unless otherwise designated, we will consider the final presidential address to Congress as being a president’s farewell address. Keep this in mind for the final question. |
Some of the greatest quotes of American history have come from these official first or final speeches. Most of these questions deal with such quotes, and the rest deal with facts about the presidents who gave the speeches. You can master this quiz. Yes, you can!
