According to Andre Tartar and Eric Benson, writing in New York magazine, Richard M. Nixon wasn't able to convince the country that he was the logical continuation of the popular Eisenhower administration. They added that the John F. Kennedy campaign played "harder, more negative, more effectively." They claim that America voted for "the pretty boy" at the start of a time of "rapid electoral realignment."
