Not only do they have to face a recovery and rehabilitation period, there is no guarantee that they'll return to the level of ability that they previously enjoyed. Tommy John surgery was named for the first baseball player to have ulnar collateral ligament replacement. Since then hundreds of athletes have had so-called Tommy John surgery.
