Kaufman's Malawi Quiz

Welcome to the May Community Quizzes -- a game for quiz takers and makers. You are probably not very familiar with Malawi. You probably couldn't pick it off the map. You probably aren't aware that it's long and thin and wriggly in shape, like a worm. Back in the mid-90s, I wasn't, I couldn't and I wasn't. Then this country most unexpectedly intruded its way into my graduate research. Here's how. This isn't going to be your ordinary country quiz. I'm not going to ask you for its former name, its capital, its unit of money, its official languages, etc. But if that's what you want, I've got them listed below, take them in good health and impress your friends! Instead, you'll get a brief introduction to the AI, machine learning and data mining techniques that allowed me to "discover" Malawi. I'll try keep it pretty basic. But you will get some dry terminology about learning and inference. And then, around Question 4, we'll get to the things that made Malawi stand out so vividly. By the way, Malawi used to be a British colony, called Nyasaland. English and Chichewa are its official languages. Its capital is Lilongwe. Its flag is pictured here. If you want to buy something there, bring plenty of kwachas.
