La Belle Epoque-1871-1914

|Background-The end of the 19th century brought with it a new emphasis upon art and culture. The Belle Epoque appeared to be an age of frivolity and decadence. Old photographs often reveal this stereotype of young and vibrant young people engaged in innocent and frivolous activities while imbibing champagne from Baccarat glasses at Delmonico’s, or attending fancy dress balls dressed in an outfit modeled on an 18th century Hussar. |
On the other hand, the gilded images hid the underlying reality. During this same period, France witnessed the beginning of the Third Republic while Germany and Italy saw their dreams of unification realized. In addition, the continents of Asia and Africa were divided up among the various European powers. Lastly, the rise of socialist parties and increased suffrage explained why this age was also known as “The Age of Mass Politics.”
This particular quiz asks for information based on some of the significant individuals, places, and events of this particular period. Other quizzes will relate to Russia and the arts during this era. As always, good luck!
