|Hollywood, California was founded as a temperance society. It's founder, Horace Wilcox, acquired the land where Hollywood stands now in 1888. He laid out an entire town and an orchard at the foot of the Hollywood hills and declared only non-drinkers could settle in his town. For 20 years, the town had no crime, firearms, jail or locked doors. By 1900 there were only 500 people living in Hollywood and the biggest issue was what to do with farmers driving their sheep through the town square. A decade later the film companies arrived.|
In 1923, the Hollywoodland Real Estate Development Company erected, what was then, the "Hollywoodland" sign, as an advertising billboard for a suburban housing development. The Hollywood sign is now one of the most famous landmarks in the United States. This is some trivia about this famous sign.
