Adherents of the Church of Christ Science are estimated, depending on the source, at 100,000 to 400,000 in the United States, and as many as 500,000 adherents worldwide. Over the last 30 years, the church has suffered declining membership. The church was founded in the United States in 1879 to spread the teachings of Mary Baker Eddy. The church advocates spiritual healing of physical ailments as an alternative to modern medicine. Although it does not forbid its members from utilizing medical doctors, a number of people have died who have rejected medical treatment in lieu of spiritual treatment. Some consider Christian Science to be a "cult," and it has been controversial due to several court cases pitting Christian Science parents who do not want to treat their children's serious diseases through medical means against the abuse laws of various states. Secretary of the Treasury Henry Paulson, former CEO of Goldman Sachs, whose "financial rescue plan" or "Wall Street bailout" was recently enacted into law, is a Christian Scientist, as is Jean Stapleton, who played Edith Bunker on "All In the Family." I have used an image of Jean Stapleton to introduce this quiz. In this quiz, you are asked to identify ten living (as of October, 2008) notable or famous Christian Scientists from the information provided in each question. As with similar quizzes I have created focusing on adherents of other religious faiths, I have strived to separate "true believers" (who are covered in this quiz) from those who may have grown up in the faith, but who no longer practice it.
